Great story, particularly liked the following paragraphs:

Degrees show that you have knowledge in some special area. Too often they embolden people to pontificate on a wide range of other subjects where they don't know what they are talking about.

The fact that academics are overwhelmingly of the political left is perfectly consistent with their assumption that third parties especially third parties like themselves should be controlling the decisions of other people who have firsthand knowledge and experience.

The cops probably haven't read Chaucer and don't know what existentialism is. But they may know what danger is.

Been to California, seems the way things are there. Hope when the big quake causes it to slide into the sea all those folks have their kitty litter firmly clutched in their hands.

The animal rights wackos are everywhere, as this editorial in the Winnipeg sun proves.

Get Bear Smart, Winnipeg

There are better, safer ways of managing black bears when they enter our
communities than by shooting them -- as recently occurred in the neighbourhood around St. Vital Park (No choice: police by Natalie Pona, May 25).

Firing a gun in an urban environment is using maximum force to manage a bear in a park.

Minimal force is the wise choice for both residents and bears.

Communities like Ottawa and Whistler manage black bears that wander into their city by having officers use dominant body language reinforced with a tool box of bangers and screamers and back-up officers to demand that the bear leave the area. This method uses bear behaviour to manage them.

To avoid injury, bears avoid conflict with each other by posturing to establish which one is dominant and then the submissive bear leaves the area. We can use this natural behaviour to our advantage.

Bears overcome their natural respect for humans when they're hungry and/or looking for a place to live. That's when they come into town.

We need to re-instill their respect for us by using aversive conditioning to
tell bears to avoid us!

You can learn more about how to manage urban black bears by going to
GetBearSmart.com.

It's time for Winnipeg to take steps to become a Bear Smart community.

Suppose those bears will agree to group therapy, Jack?

Don't think I'd like to be the facilitator for that group! Maybe Mr/Ms Willock will volunteer for that job!

Toronto doesn't have a bear problem, Winnipeg does. It's not a problem for her when she's 1000 miles away. Of course, she may be trying for a Darwin Award.

To answer your question, YES!! Out here in the People's Republic of Mexifornia we have a fairly large population (about 34 million) and a WHOLE BUNCH of them are liberals (by choice or by indoctrination) and the San Franciso Bay area is where they breed indiscriminately!! The story in question is only a small sample of the kind of idiocy that abounds here, we get a dose of it just about everyday. For example, fairly recently here in Modesto a trio of young men took turns raping a younger girl with a foreign object and when aprehended the local district attorney decided these fellows had learned their lesson and should be given parole!! I could go on but its late and I need to take another blood pressure pill!

Yeah but......and if the cops would have let the pretty kitty alone....and it ate or attacked one of those liberal fruitcakes kids...there woulda been heck to pay too....with those types of folk , there is never a middle ground. Would like to see one of them wrangle the pretty kitty out of the tree....as Bugs Buny says..."What an ultra maroon!!"

what a bunch of idiots... on the topic of animal rights freaks, theres a show on VH1 called Surviving Nugent, Very adult but very funny. If you know Ted Nugent you know he's a big time hunter, well on his show he brings people to his ranch and makes them do all sorts of things. last night he had some people extract urine from a deer, the animal rights women had a fit... they showed her though!

The whole state is full of Anti-Gunners , Ilegal aliens and Mountian Lions ! I'm routing for the Mountian Lions ! If we get more of the Lions then we will have less of the other 2 groups ! Where was the lion hit and what cal. and bullet weight was used to shoot the poor Kitty Cat ! Hand load or factory round ? Remember More Lions today means less Liberals tomorrow ! JAGG

The People of the Great State of California had another fit a couple of weeks ago. A Mountain Lion worked its way through a residential neighborhood and was found hiding in a bush outside the Lawrence Livermore Lab. If I remember correctly, this was the same day as a "peace" demonstration was taking place. The police shot that one too. They figured that it would never find its way back into the wild without causing some grief. More outraged citizens.

A couple of months ago, a mountain lion killed a hiker and almost got a biker. The only reason that the person survived was that a tug of war ensued. The lion with the head in his(?) mouth and his biking buddy pulling the feet. The lion gave up. They eventually found and killed the lion.

We could ask the animal rights people to move out of their neighborhood, and reforest the area, and move the big cats in for their protection, I'm sure the cats are librals, and would appreciate the gesture.

Maybe some of the academics would like to get a pager and have the police call THEM to take care of the lion. If they can successfully remove the lion without killing it, good for them, if not, and the lion were to, say, act like a lion and kill them, then we would have 1 less anti-people lib to deal with.

Yeah, and I saw the female biker that was saved interviewed on TV and her face is not now, nor will ever be nearly as pretty as it once was.

This reminds me of what happend in princeton NJ back in the mid 90`s
Deer were becoming a problem in that town and in the surrounding areas.Too many Exotic sports cars were hitting deer on the rural roads and the shrubs were disappering because there wasn`t enough food to support the animals in the wild. The holding capasity of the land was not able to hold up to the deer that were having two to three offspring each year.
Hunting was banned in the area for years and wasn`t an option in the over educated liberal town of princeton.I belive the wording that they used was something along the line as it was murder.Instead, birth control was the answer. After dumping a ton of money into looking at the option and finding out that it was like finding a needle in the hay stack that idea hit the recycle bin.The option of having snipers shoot hurds of deer at night came into the seen and was almost implemented untill the state said no.

I don`t know what the solution was that they came up with because i moved out of the state before all that educated thinking drove me crazy. i do believe that the state opened up the area to bowhunting and was met with much oposition just like the bear hunting season that was just opend up last year.
God thanks for moving me out of New Jersey and please keep me out of Kalifornia.

Just thinking about the question. From the wording, seems there is a belief that there are limits to stupidity...aren't. Stupidity is infinate.

Am thankfull of California, were it not for that state (particually the southern part of that state), the other 49 would be more infested with stupidity than we already are...it's a haven, a wild-life preserve fot the mentally warped...a sanatarium that allows the rest of the country go on about thier daily lives in more reasonable manner than would be possible without California.

From what I can see, we'd be better off packing a lot more of the miss-fits in the other 49 states into California than letting the Californians out.

dpastor, didn't it happen the other way around? I think the biker was killed and the hiker survived? What it all boils down to is California's misguided attempts to control nature. The moratorium on mountain lion hunting hasbeen a "boondoggle" from the get go. Adding to the problem is the everexpanding suburban population. New tracts are being built in places where previously only wild animals resided. There's gonna' be a bad interaction between man and beast.

Let me relate another "Only in California" story. A decade ago a local runner was killed and partially eaten by a young female couger. A collection was taken up for her survivors. There was also a collection requestion for the care of the lion's cub, which was found nearby. You've probably already figured out the answer. The fund for the cub brought in many times the money that the fund for the young woman's family did. Unfortunately, this sort of lopsided response has become the norm in this State. I hang my head in shame.

Evidently a lot more Kalifornians are retiring/moving to Phoenix. Just had on the news last night, coyotes are a big problem again, killing pets & harrassing people. The solution? AZ Fish&Game won't shoot them; "They were here first" was the reply -- first time I've heard them use that one, though I've heard it elsewhere. So a lot of residents are leaving food out for the coyotes/javelinas  with the response that "If they're full, maybe they won't try to eat our pets!"

Sigh... :(

I think I'll start a "Save the Coyotes" club, and have new members hang out at golf courses and the like with raw hamburger in their pockets. Hey, then maybe they won't eat the pets, right? :p

This week a woman came home a found a puma in here garage. Took DF&G 4 hours to safely dart it so it could be relocated. The problem is that there isn't any place to relocate it that isn't already occupied by puma.

Since Kalifornia prohibited killing the cats several years ago their population has exploded so it is beyond the carrying capacity of the habitat. At least two people have been killed and several more attacked. There had never been any verifiable attacks prior to the ban.

I live in a town of 94,000, about a block from an Albertson's supermarket. We have several reports of puma in the city. Last week it was about 1/4 mile from my home. Not surprising as, if I get up early enough, I can often se a flock of about a dozen turkeys feeding in our back yard.

I, personally, am a conservationist [as opposed to a preservationist], a nature lover and an animal lover. I even like puma but the total ban on killing cats was total stupidity. Let common sense be applied. Unfortunately, there isn't enough common sense in the state legislature to fill an eyedropper.

All capture attempts should be made by the lawmakers, then maybe the next batch elected won't be so stupid.

Lets let Kalifornia, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, and Wisconson become a separate country. America would much better of without them.
