Back in the early 60’s my nephew was just hunting age. His dad wasn’t much of a hunter, but did spring for one of the Argentine mausers for him. It had the long stock and was in pretty nice shape. I helped him cut the stock down and sporterize it a little. The stock sights worked fine.
With his one box of shells he got it sighted in and was ready to hunt. We lived in rural Idaho and he had 20 acres of our land to hunt on.
On his first day out he shot at a couple of nice deer and missed. On the second day he downed one with his first shot. When he got up to it he had to shoot it again using the last of that one box of ammo.
A little bit of buck fever caused him to miss. Grasping his new now empty rifle by the barrel he clubbed that deer to death. Well when got his deer home his dad wasn’t to happy to find that now he had a two piece rifle.
Now some 40 odd years later that “Two Piece” rifle is mounted over his mantle along with a really nice deer he shot with me a few years later. It always brings back fond memories of that first deer and the 7.65 club used to kill it.
