A reputable retail gun shop in my area has a 336A DL in 30-30 for $425 out-the-door. It looks to be all original: hooded front sight, checkering, sling swivels, Ballard rifling, no holes for scope, and with minor handling wear.

I failed to catch the Ser. #, so don't know date.

Checkering has some run over. Is that typical of the older factory DLs?

What do you think of the price?

Wyo...

It seems a little high to me but I'm not looking and wanting. Gun Trader's Guide (25th edition) gives these figures for a 336A DL... NIB $531, Excellent $425, Good $289. It seems to me these figures are a bit lower than what guns actually sell for.

Excellent is defined... 100% Not mint-new! Not previously sold as retail and is in NIB condition, with or without box. Showing no use... All parts are original and in new condition in every respect.

If is doesn't have the scope mount holes, it was manufactured prior to 1960.

Thanks, RD. That adds some perspective.

As you might guess, I was not looking or wanting...but while inquiring about the availability of old, fixed sight N-frame S&Ws this little number started whispering my name from the far end of the "back bar." You know how that works.

Luckily I did not have a check or the cash on me and they add 4% for credit card sales on consignment guns. So I had them set it back with my name on it and drove the 65 miles home to sleep on it.

If I go back tomorrow to get it I'll take some trading items to cut down on the negative cash flow.

Naumann,

The price sounds about right for those of us out west. I'm in western Montana, north of Missoula. I would offer $50 to $75 less just to test the waters, as the last 336A I saw was $350, but it was just that, an A not an ADL.

I see our levergun brethren getting much better prices in the midwest or down south. :(

I seem to alway do worse on the "go backs" if it's still there. I think... boy, oh boy... I almost let that get away. Just went through that on my latest 444. I did get the seller to take a few bucks off of it!

Done deal...the rifle is mine! The dealer only allows 70% of book value on trade-ins against consignment guns. That was too big of hit on my trading material so I bought outright. The only deal sweetener was that he didn't charge any tax since it was a consignment gun. That saved me 7%.

One short session at the range was pleasing. I only had 5 Win. 150 gr. factory rounds and a box of low powered Lead GC reloads. Very windy; blew the target off the frame. BUT even with factory open sights it grouped well.

I am going to enjoy owning this piece of history: manufactured in 1951.

Now I need to sell off my trading guns and put some $$$ back in the checking acct. ;-)

Sounds like a good deal! I've got a '51 336A 30-30 and love it!

Naumann,

Congrats you will love the rifle!! I know many are completely enamored with the 20" carbine, but I LOVE those extra 4 inches in the rifle!!

It's a classic and I am going to keep it just as it came from the factory, open sights and all.

I have a Win. 94 made in the '60s and it has a Williams Foolproof. Sure wish I still had the original open sight.

My 336 in 35 Rem. (1972) has Williams 5D and aftermarket sling swivel studs. It's bluing is kinda scabbie but it shoots great.

The 1951 336A DL is going to benefit from my growing "maturity" and NOT get tinkered with. I'll find a load it likes and shoot it within the limits of my abilities with the factory sights. The world is gettin' too high tech anyways! ;-)

naumann et al,
Just picked up a 336A in 30-30 myself, not the same vintage, nor the Deluxe, serial # dates it at 1978. Gold trigger and pre-crossbolt safety in what I would rate as 80% condition. Clean, with some signs of age, and the front sight hood missing, got change from $220. D & T'ed already, my only regret is the microgroove rifleing, but hey, can't have everything, and the price so good, I couldn't leave it there on the rack. Next to it sat a similar vintage 35Rem carbine with a Williams peep. Same money, if it's still there next week, I'm a gonna' be tempted to go back, even though I already have an identical one.
Might just have to see which of the 35 Rems shoot the best and sell the other, {;o).
Cheers,
