Hey Guys! What is the difference between the 1894 model Marlin in a 45/70 or the Marlin 444 verses the 1895 model?
1894 is chambered for pistol length cartridges and features a machined square bolt. Most 1894's are carbines but a longer barreled model for cowboy shooters is availalbe.
336 is chambered for rifle cartridges. It is an improved version of the old Marlin 36 design.
1895 (modern) is a slightly modified 336 action.
444 is chambered in a slightly modified 336 action.

Marlin puts their lever guns in 3 categories:
1894: Standard handgun cartridges
336: 30-30 and 35 Remington
Big Bore: 444, 1895, (45-70, 450, 475 Lingbaugh)

Will any peep sight that works on a 1895 also work on a 444? In other words, will the peep that mounts on the side or on top of the 1895 work on the 444?

Yes, if it's drilled & tapped for them, some of the late production is not.
Hole pattern for the peep sights (and scope mounts) is the same for the 336, .444, 1895 .45-70s, and pistol-caliber 1894s - all of the modern centerfire Marlin lever guns.
