WOW! I just read all the replies to my other thread. I have a new one, its sure to make my top5 favorites. Its a Lew Horton 44 combat magnum 629-1 with 3 " barrel. The weight, feel, handling qualities are wonderful. Everything comes together for a splendid package. Now if I could do something about the muzzle blast/recoil.....
Does anybody else have the short barrel magnum affliction? (or ADDICTION)

Bullethead, that disease has been in remission lately, but I've got it bad again. My first off-duty gun was a 3" 38 that I carried everywhere. Then came a Lew Horton 41 Mag 3" in stainless, and I was done for. My next is a 3" Model 65 I ordered, should have it paid off next week, already have a ton of ammo and holsters waiting for it. I have this disease so bad, if Lew Horton offered an 8mm Rast-Gasser in three inch, I'd probably buy it! Now how sick is THAT?
You might as well get used to the blast and flash from your new baby, you know you're gonna shoot it anyway! Seriously, buy a case of 44 Specials, and start shooting, you'll be fine.
The only cure for the disease is buying more guns, and that's only a temporary cure.

I have a mod 36 2" which is fun, but is hard to hold in my mitts. The mod 10-5 I have is a 5", nice, but I'd like a 2.5 - 3" instead. I also have a 3.5" pre mod 27...almost perfect if I say so myself. No wonder they are in such huge demand. If the wife (spell that "WAR DEPT") would let me buy another I might have to get a 686+ with a 2.5" bbl or maybe the 4" mountain gun, or.......its no use I've got the bug bad!!!!!

Hey bullethead I hear you on the addiction I just got hooked on short barrel magnum, I recently added a 686 with a 3 inch barrel to my collection( first revolver) and love it, the 357 packs a punch, and now I want to step up to a 44 mag now any advice on a good model, I would like to get one with a 4 inch barrel.
thanks

HKshooter....I hear ya. Those short magnums sure look nice.
I'm partial to S&W revolvers, for a 4" bbl its hard to beat a 629 mountain gun. The model 29's (Blue finish) w/ 4" barrels used to be scorned and were cheaper than the 6 or 8.38 length guns. I've been looking for a model 29-2 with a 4" bbl for quite a while and no luck. When that 629-1 with 3" bbl came along I scarfed it up post haste. I remember seeing a 2 or 2.5" model 629 a few years back, but I was short of loot. There aren't too many gun shops near where I live, so I have to wait for the guns shows. Good luck in your search.
Also, S&W made a model 520 .357 mag a few yrs ago. I'd sure like to get one of them for a present!!! And a 4" model 58 41 mag, and a 3" mod 13, and............

You sure know something's going on when touching off full power rounds in this unit. :D I had my "snubby syndrome" about ten years ago, have similar units in .41 M657 and .357 M686, but they don't get much use anymore. Think I'll dust them off and give them another trip to the pit next time out.

I had an epiphany the other day and decided to reconfigure my handgun collection, I want a three-inch Smith in each frame size up to N-frame. A 686 would be sweet, has anyone ever seen a 681 in three inch? And no collection is complete without a 44 Special, and a 45 Colt, and a 41 Mag, and (sigh)...... :) This may take awhile!
So much for my disease being in remission.

I don't know about you guys. I think your all addicted to the three feet of flame that comes out of the barrel at dusk.
All kidding aside I owned a 4 inch S&W 57 in 41 mag. Sold it or traded it off quite a few years ago. Really kick myself for doing that.
Been shooting Ruger Super Redhawks for a while now that the old 5 screw 29 is retired. I sure like the looks of the new S&W mountian gun.
Good shooting those short bbls guys.

I have a 629 3" that I used to pack around while Mule Deer/Elk hunting in CO and MT. I use a mid range load with a 240 gr. LSWC at 950 fps. It is a bit more controllable in the 3". I dragged it out of the safe the other day to admire it, and now I think it needs to go to the range.

I carry concealed a 629 3", keep it loaded with 240 specials on the street, then switch to 240 hardcast with full loads of 2400. I have not noticed any stiff recoil with this load.
then again I use A 458 Winnie when a 30/30 would probably do the trick.
maybe it is just me?

halfbreed, nothing like swatting flies with a hammer!!!!! I used to love the recoil from my Ruger #3 45-120 with 82 gr of 3031 pushing a 450 gr hard cast!!!! Only thing, I started to flinch so bad, it took quite a spell with a 22 to get over it. Now it is the sore wrist instead of a sore shoulder. Those short handguns sure have a different noise.....I like it!
