I am using Accurate #5 and a Lee 7/8 oz slug. I am using the load data from Accurate/Lee with a Max charge of 40 grains. I am roll crimping the hull with no overshot card. I am getting a very visible amount of muzzle flash. I am thinking that I may try to build a couple with a star crimp and see if the same thing occurs. (Maybe a little more wad pressure would get the powderburn started earlier). Anybody else have this "flash" with the lee 7/8 oz slug and accurate #5. I may just need to switch to the faster powder loads for this "light weight" slug. thanks in advance for any ideas. rc

I found my own answer... I am using an 18 1/2 inch barrel. Same load in a longer barrel, no more flash..... Sometimes the obvious answer is the one easiest to miss. thanks rc

Think you're on the right track with moving to a slower powder...assuming the flash is objectionable (doesn't really bother me in a hunting situation, but for defence are those that believe lower flash is a good thing).

Roll crimp is a more resistant crimp than a folded/star crimp, and that resistance should increase burning/decxrease flash...think a star crimp would lower pressure, and perhaps increase the flash. AA#5 doesn't seem like it would compress all that much...not like the fluffy powders do when compresed by wad seating.

Learned early that shotshells are unforgiving. None of the traditional pressure signes show up until you've exceeded safe limits by a large amount...that small changes in crimp, seating pressure, or componet changes result in large changes in results (and can assume large changes in pressure as well). Be safe...probably twice the number of blown shotgun barrels than anyother type.
