I saw a gun at the store today that I might want to help the grandkids to learn to shoot. Its a Phownix semi-auto .22 LR and they are asking $200 for it. Is that a fair price?

Not very impressed with the Pheonix; personally I'd pass on it.
Friend got one in a trade, and we worked with it for a bit...can say that we got it to function reliably with some types of ammo, but only one or two brands out of perhaps 5 or 6 tried. Trigger pull is pretty poor. Construction is a bit sloppy and generally "cheap".
Don't remember them as selling for $200, but I haven't looked in some time....have run across several good used Ruger Standard semi-autos of about that price. Would hold out for a better gun (does not need to be a more expensive gun). Forget the Phoenix.

A neighbor traded into one of the Pheonix 22's a couple of years back, one of the models with the interchangable barrels, a long "target barrel" and a shorter one for CCW.
I spent more time than I care to recall trying to get it functioning reliably. Too, it was only a "belly gun" at best, hitting an 8" paper plate past thirty feet was a realy iffy situation. Seems at the time they sold for about $135, maybe more, but definitely under $150.
As Ribbonstone has said, there are LOTS of Ruger Standard semi-auto pistols out there on the used market for under $200, and they have an enviable track record of both accuracy and infallable reliability.
I'd dismiss the Peonix as a bad idea!

I bought a used Ruger 22/45 (a Mark II with a different grip frame than the standard auto), for about $180 as I recall a few years ago.
It's accounted for a bunch of rabbits including a few head shots at distances you'd likely not believe if I told you, and one rattlesnake about 5 feet long.
Wouldn't sell it for twice the price!!!! I think you can do better than the Phoenix.....

When I was working in a gun shop we would sell one and a couple of days latter people wanted their money back. Beings it just dont work that way they would trade for a ruger semi, and the only time we would see them again is when they needed more ammo. It dint take very long and we quit carry them all togather. I would tell them they were a "POS", but at around $140.00 or so they just had to have it. Like others have said look for a used ruger and let the kids shoot, not watch you try to fix it. We used to get them at cost for about $65.00. This might give you an Idea of how good of quality they are.

Ya, I got one. Friend passed on and it got left to me. I was with him when he bought it. Paid like 125 and it came with a box two magazines and two barrels. It has functioned OK, but I have put only a couple of boxes of shells thru it. It's a stretch to keep all the shots in a pie plate at 25 yards. It lays there in the gun safe taking up room a real gun should. Just don't have the heart to pawn it off on someone else. Like all the above said there are lots of good 22's out there for under 200.
Good luck in your quest and God Bless
