high all, i'm new to this fourm but have been looking in for awhile. any way i have a problem and hope some of you can help?

i just mounted leupold qd bases on three of my contender barrels. they will only mount one way so that was simple enough. put rings on the scope. and as i always do when i sight in something new i started with a 25 yd target. got the windage adjusted but i was shooting almost off the board low. while trying to adjust elevation i ran out of adjustments. i got enough adjustment to be 3"-5" low depending on which barrel the scope is mounted on. do any of you guys have any suggestions.

Hello, Arky 6.5 -

Welcome to the board. I'm sure you'll find a host of 6.5 shooters here.

Check your rings to be sure you don't have front/rear rings on reversed.

You may have to put some shim under the rear of the base to adjust things.

kdub, thanks for your insight. this may be a solution, but i thought that with the q/d rings there is no front and rear rings. i don't know as i have no instructions. i bought the 6.5 barrel already set up, with the scope. however i did send the scope in for repair. but i marked the rings before i sent the scope in.

please enlighten me as to why to put shimms under the rear of base.

Not all that familiar with the Leupold QD rings, so don't know if they are staggered in height or not. Some rings are. If you have them reversed, your scope could be pointing upward from the bore axis and will cause you to max out on 'down' adjustment.

Placing shims under the rear of the scope base (not ring!) will cause the scope centerline to project downward and more closely align with your bore centerline. Your sight line will cross the bore line twice - once at around 15 - 20 yds from the muzzle and again at Point Of Impact (POI) at a distant range. The 25 yd initial sight-in is an excellent distance to get on paper and in center of the target. Then, move out to 100 yds and adjust the POI to the desired height above target center.

If you have the means to solidly support the rifle where it can't be moved and it is a bolt action, you can boresight it at the 25 yd range and save a bunch of ammo. Adjust the scope to the same POI, without moving the rifle.

The addition of shims under the base will be a trial and error project until you arrive at the required thickness to compensate for the misalignment. Shims cut from soda cans with a pair of shears work well and are thin enough to allow adjustment as needed.

I am not familiar with the mounts you are using. I always mount the Weaver 92A or the 92AS (stainless) bases and the Weaver #49041 or #49032 rings (stainless) and had a very easy time of mounting and sighting in handgun and carbines. I have not found these to move and are off good quality. Perhaps your mounts are not made for your gun? Being off that much is a red flag for me. Is your scope good? When I bore sight the guns, I use my eye and look thru the bore at something 100 yrds away, and adjust the point of aim in the scope. That gets you on paper fast and is pretty accurate. good luck

dub, went to the camp yesterday, and shimmed the rear of the bases it took, 6 .005 shims to get plenty of elevation.
still shooting at 25 yds as that is all i have at the camp. soon as i can i will get to a 200 yd range and start to wring out some accuracy loads. i have never used the leupold q/d bases and rings on my contender before but they worked just fine with my knight muzzle loader. i find it strange that 3 barrels needed to be shimmed. ???? but after shimming them i now have plenty of elevation on all three. as to reversing the rings i marked them when they came off as is my custom when removing rings so they went back on the same way they came off, and i mic'd the rings to be sure and they are the same no difference they could be placed either front or rear. the bases and rings are made for the contender barrels and will only go on one way. any way thanks for the help.
