What is the highest power 8mm wildcat I can safely rechamber my Czech 98/22 barrel to? The barrel has Georgia VT on it and it might be a rebarreled gun. I was hoping to go to the 8mm/338 without getting to max loads because the 8-06 AI gets close to 60,000psi. Could this barrel handle a 8mm/338 rechamber?

On a Mauser action the 8x68S would be a natural choice for a "magnum" 8mm.

Thanks for the reply. How is the supply of brass and dies? The load data on relaodersnest.com seems quite impressive. What are the case deminsions? I tried to find this info using a google search but came up empty handed. Any info you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The 8x68S has a case length of 2.657", case head diameter is 0.512". It's the European version of the 300 Weatherby, so to speak. Most reloaders are obtaining just a little less than 8mm Rem Mag velocities. Dies should be available from RCBS but I'd buy CH/4D instead. Cases may be dificult to obtain, not sure about your situation in the States, but in Australia they're availabe on order from RWS. Nice thing is, from all accounts RWS cases are built like the proverbial brick out-house, very strong, so they should last. I've considered this cartridge as a rechamber/rebarrel job for a ZG47 but will probably settle on a 9.3x62 as the 8x68S is more a "reach out" cartridge where I want a short range thumper, still, with a 250gr Woodleigh the 8x68S should be a OK. Some info on the cartridge is available on the AR site.

thanks. What is the AR site? I found hirtenberger brass; 100 for $71. a little expensive but I think it is worth it. Dies are only $40 at midway but I need to find someone who will rent me a reamer. I don't think reamerrentals carries one but I will check with them. I am thinking of leaving the barrel at 27". I will also use this gun as a platform for muzzle brake design testing.

Sounds like a great cartridge. You should come very close to the 8mm Rem magnum with that 27 inch bbl. I've been shooting my 8mm Rem mag since 1979. Get 3080 with the 220 gr seirra spitzer boattail out of the factory 24 incher over my chrono. I am really pleased with the way it performs.

When I stepp0ed up to the 8mm from the 30 cals I found it killed just as well or better, shot just as flat or flatter and didn't distroy meat near as much. Just something about the big 220 grain that worked right. Good luck with your new chambering.

Bob.....have you tried Retumbo yet in the 8mm Mag? I've been working with it for the past year in both of my 8's, and it's extremely accurate (86.5 grains under the 220 Sierra is an absolute tac-driver).
