i am going to buy a 357 magnum lever rifle sometime and was thinking of the marlin 1894C. I want to be able to feed 38spl cartidges in it and heard the marlin feeds them better than the winchester 94. What one would you prefer. The marlin or winchester. They are both the same price I think. Just want your personal opinions.

thanks

Run down to the local shop. Pick them both up. Throw them to your shoulder. Work the action, feel the trigger. Then take home your Marlin.

My 1894C feeds anything, including .38 full wadcutter. But the norm is that they will feed round nose or semi wadcutter .38 Special.

I second that. Or, you could save a little time and just buy the Marlin! :p

I like the Skinny-Winnie Stocks better, but you can always sand down the Marlins, and personalize them to your tastes.

Between the two, I'll vote for the Marlin, but don't overlook those sleek little Rossi/Puma 92's, they're great guns too.... a little nostalgia there too!

Decisions..... buy one of each :D

Well we bought a winnie trapper a few years back since the price was right and stuffed it with 38 spl. The rifle was a bit tight from first but soon worked into become a slick operating little rifle. It has never failed to load and eject a round..
A friend just bought a 1894 Marlin and brought it over to the range straight from the gun shop. the fit etc was good and the action smooth. We loaded it up with four different loadings of 38 Spl, and that little rifle would hang up on every different bullet we had. It did not matter if it was around nose , round nose flat point or semi wad cutter . We even tried the wad cutter . the rifle would hang up if you tried to rachet them through fast.

Well put that in your pipe and smoke it. This is not the first Marlin that I have seem jam up not fully ejecting a 38 if you operate the lever at a speed required for a cowboy shoot.
Not all the winnies will shoot the 38 Spl. granted , but the ones that do , will spit ever one outwith out a hitch.

I was really dissappointed since I heard so much about the Marlins, and I have a 50's 336 /35 RC that is just perfect .
We also have guide gun , and I would say that it is not the best of levers either.
The point is the new Marlins are not all that they are cracked up to be.

Harry, maybe Marlin EXPORTS all their returns to Canada. ;)

The ones we get here in the U.S. are usually fine guns.

Marlin does have a .38 special rifle the cowboy competition. I have the marlin .357 CB and it will feed most any .38 round I want to put in it, but I just don't like the scum ring in the chamber so I have quit using the .38s in it and have a lot if .357 and it seems to cycle them as fast as I can make it shoot. Bottom line if you want to shoot nothing but .38s get a weapon chambered for it.

Swany,

Where ya been? Thought you got lost after MarlinTalk shut down.

Good to see you're still taken on feed.

Gosh someone missed me, thanks, I'm still using oxygen too. Always happy to hear from a friend. I've haunted this site for some time. Take and have fun. Swany

A friend brought a new Trapper out here to sight it in last evening. Cute little gun, trigger was as heavy as the gun. We sighted in with factory .357s and ran some .38 Specials loaded with Lyman 358665 cowboy FN though it. It feed them fine.

Yup, Swany drops by, now and again.

Bye
