View Full Version : .470 Capstick Loads ?
Has Anyone Got Any Good Loads For The .470 Capstick? It Is The .375h@h Case Blown Out Straight To Take The .475 Caliber Bullet. I Have A Remington Model 700 Chamberd For This Cartridge. It Has A 24" Barrel. No Loading Manual Lists This Round.

I'll tell you that I use IMR-4320 powder using a 500 grain bullet. You can start off at 80 grains of powder and work your way upward.
Jeb,
Either use maximum loads for the 458Win to start off and go upwards, or starting loads for the 458Lott. I basically transferred my 458Lott loads for the 470Capstick and did okay. Currently using a 500gr Woodleigh with 80gr AR2208 (Varget) in a 24" barrelled Rem700. Built the rifle too light at 4kg ... now looking at adding around 1kg using lead and epoxy before I start shooting it again. Mind you I built it to shoot a 500gr Woodleigh at 2150fps which is pretty mild for the case capacity.
Cheers...

Jeb my .470-Capstick shoots a 500 grain bullet at a velocity of 2365fps!
Con, where did the .458 Win mag and .458-Lott sneak in through the window?

Cozy,
Sorry a bit unclear. I first started my big-bore shooting with a 458WM and then graduated to a 458Lott when no loading data was available, particularly with local ADI powders. Given the Lott's greater case capacity, substituting close to maximum 458WM loads into the 458Lott got me started safely and I increased loads from there. The Capstick has similiar case capacity to the 458Lott and again there is no data using ADI powders. I knocked back my mild Lott loads a few grains and started upwards. Experience in my rifles (a CZ550 and Rem700) seem to indicate that mild 458Lott loads make for slightly milder 470Capstick loads using AR2208 (Varget). Good places to start. Your load suggestion of 80gr IMR-4320 is spot on for a starting load. Its a similar powder to AR2208 which in my 458Lott with 500gr Woodleigh maxed out at around 86gr. In my Lott (not Capstick), AR2206H (H4895) was also a great performer. Havent worked on that one in the Capstick yet.
Cheers...
