I would like recommendations for loading my 454 in a light load, what poders are best? I have a lot of hard cast (nat bullet co) but poor design shape (not bear tooth) 300 gr bullets to shoot up. I don't want to use 45 colt brass. I want a clean powder and less recoil. Maybe @ 1000 fps .

Jim,
Hodgdon's no. 26 manual shows data for HS-6 and HS-7 for the 300gr. bullet. I've not used either in my .454 but have had excellent results with both in .38 special, .41 and .44 magnums. I have found that the published velocities for Hodgdon's loads are a bit exaggerated when chronographed.
300 grain bullet:
Starting Loads Maximum Loads
Powder Grs. Vel. CUP Powder Grs. Vel. CUP
HS-6 15.0 1084 31100 HS-6 19.0 1450 46200
HS-7 16.0 1111 33400 HS-7 22.0 1501 50200
Hope this helps

I have tried Titegroup in 44 and 45 colt with good results. I tried two loads in the 454 with a 255 swc bb. 9.5 grains didn't work well, but 10.5 seemed to tighten up fairly well around 4 inches at 75 yards, but I haven't been back to try again. Hodgdon's lists 11.2 as a max for nosler 250 at 36000 cup. I like this powder it seems to give good accuracy and very cost efficient as it sells for around ฝ - 15 per pound retail.
