Good Morning Fellows.
Your happy correspondant is the proud new owner of an 870 express slug gun. The cantelever mount provides a great deal of eye relief 6 inches or so, and I have noticed that some scopes that are marketed as "shotgun" have the same amount as a rifle scope.
What have you fellows had luck? I have had well below average luck with Tasco's, and have the scars to prove it. I have always used high end quality optics on my rifles, but would prefer to stay less than a C-note for the shotgun.
Thanks in advance.
Steve
whitehunter35,
My 870 had a Simmons (diamond target sight) shotgun scope mounted to a B-Square saddle. Worked great as far as plenty of eye relief and the scope is clear. However, I did remove it because I had harder time keeping a running deer scoped for a follow up shot. In fact, I only used it in the woods two times. I'll try and sell it when deer season approaches.

Friends All.......Here at Dixie Slugs we have tried about every known combo on our test guns....both rifled and smoothbore.
After all is said and done.....we have selected the Luepold 1X-4X scope. 1X is great for those close in brush/swamp running shots and 4X is about all that is needed on out.
Just some thoughts........James
Thats what I use the luepold 1-4. in fact that is the only thing that I haved used since i started hunting deer. i keep it in the 2x most the time and then move it up if i see one creeping in from a distance. I am not sure about the $ situation it might be out of the price range.

Not the same gun, was shooting a Brwoning A-bolt rifled 12ga....looks like a fat barreled, pot-bellied magaizine, varmint rifle unless you mappen to see the muzzle's size. Brother's gun, and we mounted a nice 4X Leupold on it for testing.
Wouldn't hit our eyebrow...did hit my forehead once, but the occular would catch your hat and glasses and toss them off your ehad at each shot. Needed more eyerelief. The only other "spare" scope in the house was a 2.5X10X Simmons Atec...has just about 1" more eyereief than the Leupold.
That cured it. Never was a problem with the Leupold from off hand, only from the bench...but he's still happy with that Simmons (to be fair, it's usually cranked down to 3X and left there).
Something with about 3-4" of eyereief is about right...may be a little crowded with the typical 2-3" provided by most. Could use teh long eyerelief "shotghun" scopes and mount them a bit ahead, but think that 3-4" of eye relief would serve (and make a nicer looking combination).
