Guys at the gunrange put me onto Wolf Match Target .22LR ammo that they are now using for their smallbore benchrest rifle shooting. They were buying it from www.fulton-armory.com by the case lots.

Gave them a call and ordered a case (5,000 rounds) for $250.00, delivered.

My Kimber 82 is like an expensive woman - only the best will do! Heretofore, the only ammo to group in this finicky rifle was Lapua Midas "M", at $11.50/box of 50. This new stuff is called Standard Plus, is made in Germany and shoots slightly better than the Midas "M". And only costs $2.50/box of 50.

If anyone is looking for a good target .22LR load, might want to try this stuff out - sure glad I got a case of it! Now, need to figure who I can dump this Lapua and Eley Tenex ammo on. :p

My Kimber .22 Hunter and Winchester 52B rifles both love Wolf Match Target ammo. Locally, it goes for around $34 per brick when you can find it. It is well worth the price. Thanks for the heads-up on Fulton Armory. :D

I have to agree about the Wolf Match Target . The father in law bought a box at the range one week while shooting his CZ and the results were outstanding! I had never seen more accurate 22LR ammo.

I lost a warm up match this summer using the Wolf match target. I chose to experiment with the match target at this match. One bad shot was due to the ammo and it put me from 1st to 2nd place. Not big problem - Not much riding on warm up match but WOULD NOT USE WOLF MATCH TARGET WHEN IT REALLY COUNTS! I've tried the Wolf Match Extra (more$) and its does group smaller than the match target. I've even seen a another even more expensive 22 match ammo from Wolf but can not remember where or exactly what it was called.

OK, here my take on 22 match ammo:
Don't waste your time on the medium priced ($3 to $7 per box) ammo for several reasons.

1st) If the match is that important buy the best for your rifle which means about $12 to $15 per box of 50! Here the operative word is what's best for YOUR rifle - You must determine this by trial and error ahead of time. AND it will be expensive to try most of the major manufacturers as I've found that most rifles need a minimun of 25 to 35 rounds of the ammo in question shot through them before you start shooting for groups to compare.

BTW - My target rifle likes Eley Ultimate EPS = $$.

2nd) If the match isn't that important use an ammo that is less expensive. Most 22s will shoot well with an inexpensive ammo if you will take the time to experiment and find which one your rifle likes. This is no easy task- Think how many there are! Again the most common error I've seen shooters make when testing/checking out ammo is to compare groups too early - Put 25 to 35 rounds through the gun before you start shooting for groups to compare. Also shoot many groups to be sure the barrel isn't still settling down i.e. groups getting better.

A caution here - the lighter the contour barrel the more heat can effect accuracy. So you need to shoot alot but space it out don't heat up the barrel to much. When you find one that your gun really likes buy all of that lot number you can find or afford!

Just from experience, I'd suggest you include CCI Blazers, Federal Lightnings and PMC 22lr ammo in your testing as they have proven to be surprisingly accurate in one rifle or another that I've seen.

My Ruger custom 10/22 has had that ammo and only got so so groups out of it. I tried a different lot # to see if I had just gotten a bad lot but it was the same with that brick too. Mine likes CCI Green Tag. I shot it's best group to date with it... a 0.164" 5 shot group @ 50 yds.. I haven't tried anything else since.

P.S.

My Ruger has a custom bedded Fajen stock, a Green Mountain barrel, a 7oz. Kidd trigger group, and a custom action job. About the only thing that is still factory original is the reciever. It has an 8-40x56mm Tasco tactical scope mounted with Leupold Mounts and rings. It is one sharp shootin' little gun.

That third type of wolf ammo is called Match Gold. I don't care much for it either

Wolf ammo in a bolt action is fine, but they can jam up an auto very quickly. Very dirty ammo. My custom 10/22 liked R-50 the best.

I'm really happy for you guys who've had good luck with Wolf ammo. It's been a couple of years since I tried some Wolf "match" ammo. I don't remember what particular type it was, but it didn't shoot well in any of my guns. It was also very dirty. For those of you who haven't tried it, I would suggest only buying one box to try in your guns before "investing" in a large quantity.

The Wolf ammo out there today may be better than what I tried a couple of years ago. What I tried, however, was enough to keep me from buying any other Wolf ammo since then.
