How many of you guys get or have seen Backwoodsman Magazine? I saw it on a news stand about 3 years ago and picked it up. For any of you guys interested in surplus rifles, blackpowder guns and old pistols as well as knives and primative archery you'd love this magazine. Also has a lot of stuff on survival and self sufficiant living. Its my favorite mag. just wish it came every month instead of every other month.

It's really hard to find on the news-stand around here, and subscribing is about the only way to receive it on a regular bases. I think what I appreciate about the magazine is the lack of syndicated writer syndrome!

The articles are written by real people who live real lives. The content and style of the magazine reflects this practicality.

It kind of reminds me of the flavor of Fur-Fish-Game back in the sixties. A fun read.

Yeah, its not burdened by pros who make a living at writting about the outdoors and the equipment that goes with it(usually too pricey for my wallet anyway). Its geared toward folks who don't want to or can't drop a thousand bucks on a new firearm. My firearm collection might make some laugh but it suits my needs and I didn't pay more than $200 for any one of my guns. If I made my living in the woods I'd invest more but being a casual shooter and weekend warrior during hunting season I don't see much sense in spending a months wages on any single gun.

Just received the latest issue, and thoroughly enjoy the how to articles. I see that Best of Backwoodsman vol III is out, so I guess I will get mine on order tonight. I'm thinking of giving the Piroque a try this winter. Being a Full Time RV'r
it should fit on top of the RV, and be light enough to handle up and down without too much strain.

Interesting, when you email them, usually Charlie will respond... albeit sometimes two weeks later, he does answer his communications personally.

Re. Backwoodsman Mag.
Great people there. Back in '01 the mill where I worked was permanently closed. About that time my subscription expired. Charlie sent the usual reminder notice. I hadn't found another job, nor were the prospects looking too good. Being over 60 is not a good qualification for a new hire. I hated to just ignore Charlie's notice as I enjoyed the mag. and didn't want him to feel it was otherwise so I droped him a note explaning and apologizing. I promised to re-up as soon as I got work again. He came back with a note and a free one years subscription with good luck wishes. Almost made me cry.
Not being accustomed to receiving freebies and knowing of Charlies passion for old knives, I sent him a little antique pen knife that had been in the family for 80 or 90 years. It didn't mean a whole lot to me even tho I had kept track of its history, somewhat. It was taking up space in my cabinet and I figured Charlie would appreciate it more than I did. Gol dang if he didn't come back with a thank you note and an additional year on my subscription.
Needless to say I've since renewed with a check.
People like that deserve loyal friends and more.
God bless you Charlie.

Yep, I agree. Charlie really seems to be "good people." And his magazine is about the only one I'll read cover-to-cover, every issue.

Dispite how we sometimes perceive the general populas as cruel and uncaring some folks like Charlie do exist! I just wonder if anybody else has noticed that seems to me that people who love guns and repect them tend to have come from good stock and would give the shirt off thier back to help a fellow gun enthusiast out . I wonder on the other hand how mant gun hating liberals would do that for you ?

It is unfortunate that many anti-gun advocates are ignorant about the many decent and safety conscious folks involved in the shooting sports. They see only one gun culture, the negative one associated with inner city violence and the lunatic fringe involved in malitia and anti-government activity. I have met many decent folks in the shooting sports and a few I'd be leery about sharing a range with. The political rhetoric thrown around also does'nt help. Personally, I refuse to join the NRA because of Mr. LaPierre's discription of law enforcement as jack booted thugs. My brother was a cop for 5 years and got shot at plenty in the line of duty. There is such a thing as reasonable gun laws but the politics has kept us from finding a balance between public safety and the legitamate right to gun ownership. Like a lot of hot issues folks need to stop ranting and take a sober and rational look at the issue. Just my 2 cents.
