Found a spare small, thick "O" ring in the misc. junk cabinet. Slipped it over the safety and it works like a charm! This way I won't have to modify the LTD1 and perhaps lose some collector value in the far future when I hang up the guns.

Well done. The first three pages in particular are well thought out. It is not easy to articulate the history of the arms, our individual responsibility and the problem itself.
The fix is pretty well known to those of us who are "obsessed' with this stuff. For new owners your Tech Note will stand the test of time.
The pictures are good. It is not easy to take pictures and make them clear and uncluttered. I have attached a picture of my Winchester Timber rifle with an O-ring on the safety. It is the simplest solution - but not totally fool proof.

Please check the formating. Some of the pictures are covering up the text. It's too good of an article to have some of the text missing.

How about just removing the amout of metal that extends beyond the receiver when the safety is "OFF". That way the safety is functional but you would have to push it "ON" with the end of a pencil or something that would fit into the hole. You would still have the ability to take the safety off is just the same way as before the modification.

The O-ring idea is a good one and so is the one reason the hammer safety IS good for...unloading the rifle.

A better and more needed design change would have been a magazine cut off in my opinion.

I still have and hunt with my Glenfield 30 (Wards model 336) that I got at a garage sale back in the mid seventies. It does not have the hammer block safety. I will not get rid of it for that reason. I've never had an unintensional discharge, and I've taken many whitetails with it. And I always take it on my deer hunting trips, no matter what other guns I take. It's a great gun for still hunting in the woods. I have had deer freeze and look in my direction when I pull the hammer back, but they don't go very far after that...

Nicely done. How about same for Winchester?
