i found some of these in the store, i have an 18in. straight cyl. barrel (no choke) for my rem 870 shotgun and was just wondering if i could shoot these out of it.

its 12 ga. and chambers fine, but it says "for use only in orion flare guns" so im not sure.

has anyone ever tired it?

Have done it from a no-choke barrel, but would not care for the effects of a choked barrel. Haven't a clue to the diameter of the flare they launch, but from quick estimates, it apperas to be pretty close to bore size...and I'd not care for a burning flare stuck in a nice barrel (they burn very very hot).

They aren't loud, are very low pressure, and believe they are black powder driven (smells like black...smokes like black...rusts like black...if it's not black powder, then it's a form of pyrodex). Doesn't make much difference to a plastic Orion flare pistol, most are an orange plastic, so the loads are of low pressure, and the black powder fouling doesn't do them a lot of harm.

Think you'd be much beter off getting a flare gun to launch those than taking a chance of ruining the bore of a good shotgun. If you just ahve to try, find a ratty old near worthless gun for a trial (the pressure is proably lower than anything else avaiable in 12ga....after all, it only tosses that light weight flare about 150feet).
