I have started building a Martini sporting rifle. I have recently purchased a Martini-Greener action and I have a 30 cal barrel and stocks ready for modification and fitting!
It will likely be a rimmed version of the .30-06 but also possible is the 300 flanged Nitro Express(basically a rimmed 300 H&H mag as I recal)
This rifle will go very well with the full sized Martini Henry in 577/450.
2 nice additions to my 577 Sniders, soon I'll be using only single shots for hunting!

Sounds like a great project! We need some pictures and keep us updated.

yes I will post updates. Right now I have most of the bits sitting together. It will take some time as money is tight. I will have to get it done in stages.
First is to get the action parts cleaned up nice, get the stocks ready for fitting. I am trying to find the best gunsmith in the area to get it put together and ream the chamber etc.

There's a poster at http://forums.nitroexpress.com/ubbthreads.php?Cat= doing a similar project with the 375 Mag Flanged on an old Westley Richards Martini action. His moniker is DoubleD and has been a Martini enthusiast for many years.
Should you run into any concerns, he may be able to help. Here's the thread http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=single&Number=7754&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#Post16552

Douglas is a friend of mine(internet buddy). He has been a great help to me in starting this project.
He is quite a knowledgable Martini rifle guy! We are both on another forum specializing in old British rifles.
thanks.

I thought you two may have crossed paths at some point. Douglas is very knowledgeable and a fine fellow.

We have been discussing our projects a bit, looks like his 375 NE and my 300 NE might be too much for a martini action(I had thought it was stronger than that)
Looks like mine will become a rimmed 30-06.

What about a lightly loaded 333 Jeffery Flanged? Wasn't it loaded around 20 tons psi? A tad bit lighter load would get you around 18 tons, if the cartridge would fit in the Martini.
Maybe a 350 Rigby Flanged would be similar, but I can't recall.

All sounds good. I have a nice barrel, .30cal that's what I am trying to work with. I could still go with the 300 and load it only up to medium pressures I suppose. But the 30-06 flanged sounds easiest to do.
If I had to barrel shop as well I would likely be after an old BP express calibre of somekind, perhaps a .577x3" BPE.

How about a 30/348? A 170 grain bullet ahead of 60.0 grains of 4350 will get you 2710 fps. The action can easily handle the load, as it isn't even a max load. It was my starting load, and I never changed it as it shot so well. I got too good a offer for the old Martini and sold it a few years back, and regreted it ever since. A friend has one chambered for 303/348. He just used the 303 barrel that was installed he removed and rechambered it using a 348 reamer, and reinstalled the barrel. Just a thought.

sounds good. I am keeping a list of all possible calibres. It may partly end up being something my gunsmith has a reamer for. Or if I come across a long 50 cal octagon barrel and someone wants a 30 cal barrel it could end up being a 577/500 or a 50-90. Who knows how this will turn out?!!!
For now I have lots of action cleaning etc. and fitting the rear stock to keep me occupied.
