Hello All,

My new H&R 1871 BC has shallow button groove rifling! At first I was dubious of the guns ability to shoot lead bullets, so I slugged the bore and sure enough, it was a tight .457 groove diameter. I called H&R customer svc. and talked with a very amiable and knowledgeable fellow who said " yes, that conforms with their production tolerance of .456-.457!". I then e-mailed Marshall and laid it out for him. He mailed back saying that the throat diameter was most important, mine probably being .460-.462. That his cast bullets sized to .460 would shoot well! Well, I`ve been out of shooting and loading for years and had sold or given away all of my equipment. A call to Midway solved that problem, and an order to Beartooth for some 400 gr. LFN BB bullets completed the deal! Holy smokes, soon I`ll be back in the groove.
I anticipate shooting these plain base bullets at moderate velocities, Marshall suggested 24 gr. 2400, I`ve shot that load in the past and can attest to it`s easy shooting character. I`m also thinking of 30 gr. IMR4198, also a nice easy shooting load, anyone have their two cents worth to put in over a nice easy shooting load??
When I get up to my hips into this, I`ll mail back with my experiences, until then, everyone play it cool and take it easy!
Richard
