I trying to sift thru the choices and decide what is the right Aimpoint for a .44 mag. Is there anybody here who has experience with this subject who could offer some advice?

I shoot an aimpoint 5000 on my 7.5 super redhawk and it is great. I also have a 2-7 tasco that to my surprise still works great after about a thousand handloads thru it.

There seems to be some choice about the degree of eye relief, what is appropriate for a handgun?

The Aimpoints have an infinite eye relief. Most pistol scopes have enough that you can hold them at arms length without any problems.
Be sure that you have the mounts tight or your scope/aimpoint will slip. For some reason handguns are tough on scopes. Just been lucky I guess.
