Fraudulent Marketing (http://www.beartoothbullets.com/tech_notes/archive_tech_notes.htm/55)

MikeG has once again given us a thought provoking view on one of today's big marketing fallacies! A big thank you to Mike for his time in putting this together!

Good analysis. I would have to agree with almost all of it.

I liked your article. One thing I've heard that makes jacketed bullets so effective that isn't mentioned in your article in the rotational effect upon a jacketed bullet.

For instance take a 270 winchester at say 3000 fps. with a 1-10 twist bbl the bullet is rotating at very high speeds. This rotational force helps to mushroom the bullet as it slows down.

In my early hunting days with the old 270 you would often find pieces of the jacket in odd places in the anmial. The Bullets would come apart and spin chunks a long ways from the bullet path.

I believe I heard that the bullet I talked about above can be rotating up to 200,000 rpm.

I read an article on this back in the late 60's so it's been a while. I may just be full of balony, but I do think that is part of the reason jacketed bullets are so effective.

Once the pieces come loose, yes, they'll spin away from the main bullet. But this would be true with any bullet that doesn't retain 100% of weight.

As far as aiding expansion, probably so to a minor degree. Actually, most Ke formulas ignore the rotational energy of the bullet. It's small but it's there.
