Hey all,
I am new here so go easy on me. :) I have always used Clays powder for my .45 ACP. Metered well, shot consistantly, and kept my guns clean. I have only used this for my .45ACP. I live in Southwest VA and have the opportunity to use a sizeable amount of any Alliant powder I need. Can anyone share their experinece with Alliant powders or one of Alliants equivalents to the Clays? What I am really looking for is a replacement for my Clays that Alliant makes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Don't believe any of the fast Alliant powders is going to meter as well as Clays...Clays is a very fast-dense powder, which Alliant has, but its uniform metering isn't matched by Red Dot (which is closest in burning rate). Bullseye meters pretty well, but it's reputaion for being a smoky.dirty powder is pretty well established.
If I had to choose an Alliant powder, would probably go with Red Dot or Bullseye...will still use larger charge weights to generate the same vel. and pressure, but not drasticly more.
Justa s an example:
230gr. RNL / .45acp
MAX LOADS (Lyman #48):
cLAYS......4.3GR.......818fPS.....17,100cup
Red Dot.....5.3gr.......835fps.....15,300cup
Bullseye....5.0gr.......815fps.....14,400cup
Have one Colt .45 that's been fed diet of the above 230gr. RNL/ 5.0gr. of Bullseye...for a couple of years was getting well over 5K a read burned thought that pistol. It's still a standard load for the .45acp's, event hough 231 and others are cleaner, it doesn't bother me..they get cleaned after each session.
