I took some reloading data from this site and applied it to my Win# 94. in 444. It was a full load of H335 and a 300 gr cast slug. I have used this powder before but not that much of a load. The issue is that it took so much effort to compress load that the die left a noticable groove near the end of the bullet. I do not know what to make of this. The case did not bulge. In past loads that were a little lighter there was a light ring around the bullet and they shot fine.
I was wanting to step up to a 330 gr. bullet and still try to get a max charge but do not think it is wise to compress any harder. My chamber may be a little short. But does this sound like an unsafe issue???

Do the rounds chamber OK? If you haven't loaded this bullet before, is it a larger diameter than the previous bullets you were using?

Flashhole,
I would not load any more of them. They may not harm the gun,but varying overall lengths will not help the accuracy.
you remind me of the'old days'when I would try anything once.
I was stuffing powder intto my 45/70 cases, and as I was loading the last ones, the ones loaded first were growing in length,as I watched.
The accuracy was lousey.

I have used this bullet and this powder before and the lenght was just shy of contact with the lands. It shot fine and feed fine. I have not been to crazy about going any longer in lenght.

Maximum overal length in my Winchester .444 with the Lee 310 bullet is 2.490" Loading to 2.50" is iffy as far as making the turn from the loading gate into the magazine. Longer rounds once in the magazine will feed through the action and chamber. You may be following a load for the Marlin 444 rifle which will acept a longer COAL.

My winne will work ok with this 300gr, at 2.520 If this is an unsafe set up is there a powder that will give same type of F.P.S. and does not need to be as compressed.

There are lots of threads n loading the .444 here.
These four loads work well in my Winchester Timber rifle with 17 3/4" barrel. All are for the Lee 310 grain bullet and use Winchester large rifle primers.
56.0 gr. of Hodgdon 335 gives 2,041 frps with an E of 25 and a Sd of 14 fps. This load is heavily compressed and COAL is 2.50". Due to the wide meplat it will not make the turn into my magazine.

42.0 grains of IMR 4198 gives 2,032 fps with an E of 31 and a SD of 16 fps. This load is short enough that it feeds fine but it is compressed.

52.0 grains of Hodgdon 4895 gives 1,974 fps with an E of 34 and a SD of 19 fps. I just ran out of room and could not put any more in the case and still feed the cartridge through the magazine. Good load though.

44.0 grains of Alliant Reloader 7 gave me 1,904 fps with an E of 40 and a Sd of 20 fps. Again I was running out of case capacity. Marlin owners seem to have the best luck with Reloader 7. My Winchester seems to prefer either of the 4198's.

A couple of searches will give you a lot of loading information on the board!
