I wanted to give the big boys down in the river bottom a few days before I set after them again but decided to go back to that dove weed patch and see if I could catch those hogs that where out feeding last night.

I set up on the edge of some bull mesquite where game had been moving out into the weeds. Just sat on the ground, very hidden, and in full camo. I was a little worried about the wind as we usually have a strong SE breeze. This evening there was no wind. I had two does move real close to me and before they got up to the weeds they caught my scent and spooked. I was thinking about moving as it was getting very late and I heard some hogs coming out of the mesquite. Three white spotted hogs appeared and when they got to the same spot the deer had been they spooked and headed back into the deep brush. There was no detectable wind but it was obvious that my scent was moving exactly where I didn't want it. I withdrew to a little higher ground that would let me watch the weed patch but I just couldn't see anything enter the patch.

It was now getting dark and I decided I needed to go ahead and move down into the weeds and see if I could run into some hogs. I moved into the weeds a step at a time as visability was just a few feet and snakes really like this dove weed. I had gone about 15 yards and came to a spot where there was a open strip about 35 yards long. I just remained still for a few minutes and danged if a boar hog didn't step into the other end of the open strip walking towards me. No time to get in a better position, I just brought my 444P and shot him from a standing position... shot him right in the forehead with a 300-gran Beartooth 444 WFN! Needless to say he went down like a sack of rocks!

I took him over to a family that does some work for me and always appreciates the fresh meat. This is a father/son fence building team that really know the deer and hogs.

Don't worry MikeG... plenty more spotted ones where this fellow came from!

Might have been the one I saw, although it was raining last time and the scope was wet on both ends, as were my glasses.

A close relative, anyway!

I'm not worried about you running out of hogs down there..... LOL

Good shot!

Bet that family is tickled to death - looks like the right eat'n size! The head shot didn't ruin any of the good meat. :D

RD: Nice hog! I've been on vacation and was unable to get on-line. Looks like you've been plenty busy. Lets us know how the hunt with MikeG goes.

Nice shot ranchdog. I was going to say I wish we had them up here, but Marshall got one a while back up north of me. Got to talk to him about that the lucky dog.
