I bought a 336 Cowboy 38-55 last year and want to put a scope on it. I just bought a AO (or XO off of the Marlin site) scope mount which positions the scope further forward. What are your opinions of this mount? I need a cheap long eye relief scope to put on it? Would that be a pistol scope? What low powered scope should I put on? I can't afford a Leupold....

You need a 'scout scope' or something with what is called intermediate eye relief. More than a regular riflescope, less than a handgun scope.
Burris might make one, as I recall. There won't be nearly as many choices as regular scopes. Might see what you can find on ebay searching on scout scope.

The only ones I know of in current production is the Leupold and Burris scout scopes. I have the Leupold and it's a great piece of glass.
Too, I've seen folks mount handgun scopes, but never tried them to see how well they worked out.

I have the scout mount on my 444 and really like it, I got a good deal on a Burris Scout scope and it has done very well so far. I don't think you could go wrong with either a burris or leupold scout scope, both come from great companies with great customer service reputations. There is someone here in this forum that mounted a Burris 2x7 pistol scope in a XS scout mount and said that its eye relief was perfect. I was very tempted to do this, but I got a really good deal on the Scout scope. I'd say you need a scope with anywhere between 9 and 17 inches of eye relief.

I can't vouch for use on a levergun, but a friend used the Leupold on a Savage .308 Scout Rifle. The scope worked great and was as fast-handling as advertised. (It's a shame the carbine didn't do nearly as well.)

I'm thinking I made a mistake ordering this. I can't seem to find an intermediate cheap scout scope. Does anyone know Marlins return policy?

Look arround ebay, if your going for less than 100 bucks you could find something there, maybee even a cheap pistol scope with the right amount of eye relief for the scout mount.
These long eye relief scopes have a very small field of view for hunting ! JAGG

Only when you close your non-shooting eye as many do with conventional scopes. With Scout/long eye-relief optics, open both eyes and you retain full binocular vision. It may seem odd at first, and some folks never quite get a comfortable feel for it, but if it works for you...Oh Momma!

I have two of the Burris Scout's in 2.75x on my M48 and M44, and they work great. I bought both from Natchez Shooters Supply in Chattanooga TN for $189.00. You didn't say what you considered cheap enough, but have you considered a Red Dot sight? They are more for speed work than precision, but you can still get groups comparable with iron sights, and they have the advantage of a single sight plane as well. Just a thought.

I sent it back and bought a Williams FP peep sight. I think I'll be happy with that.

Steeler,
How's accuracy with that Marlin CB .38-55??? seriously Jonesing for one of those, but I've heard some remarks about poor accuracy with both jacketed and cast bullets. I can't think that marlin would have a rifle with an accuracy problem and continue to produce it without changes. I am aware that the bore diameter is larger than the .375" "standard" so that doesn't give me heartburn.
