I have a Marlin 1894C and would like to mount a scope. I'm interested in recommendations as to scope power, fixed or variable magnification etc.

I already have a couple of bases a Leupold 63B and some weaver grand slam bases.

Thanks,
Tim

Perhaps you know my friend Bobby Gallup in Rocklin, CA. We worked together at Travis AF Base 20 years ago.

California blacktails are easy to find but bucks are outnumbered by does by a wide margin. There are good deer hunting spots near Stumpy Meadows Reservoir outside of Georgetown. Farther yet the Hellhole Reservoir has some big bears. I also had good luck hunting Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation lands near New Hogan Reservoir. These little known public lands receive very light hunting. Hunt the edges of the clearcuts and meadows in early morning and late evening.

44 MAG is no long range cartridge but many of us older guys need some magnification. I like the 2.5X fixed power scopes for 44 MAG carbines. A few years back Sportsman's Guide offered TASCO 2.5X "shotgun" scopes for less than $40.00. Simmons also offers value priced scopes in this power. I'm a big fan of Millett 2 piece bases and turn in style rings. But the single rail Weaver is popular.

Good hunting to you.

I have a Leupold 2x7 on my 1894 / 45 Colt. It's perhaps a bit more magnification that you need for that gun, but it was available so I used it.

A smaller scope would work just as well, 1x5 or 1.5x5, and perhaps balance better on that gun.

Good luck.

TR, Small world, sorry I don't know your friend Bobby but he lives less than a mile away. He is in the local phone book. I have been to Stumpy Meadows on my way to Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Thanks to every one for your thoughts. It's a great rifle.

I mounted a Bushnell Trophy Shotgun scope on mine -- very bright with variable magnification from 1.75 - 4X. Very nice.
