IF and I mean IF I get drawn next week for Elk I am trying to decide which bullet to load my Weatherby .338/.378 in. I have 250g Barns X, Nosler Partitions, Serria GameKings and a box of Combined Technologies. I have never hunted with the Combined Technologies before and I think any of these will do but I wonder if anybody has issues with any of these choices.

If you think your 7mag or 30.06 makes a hole you ought to see the energy a .338 delivers! :D

The FailSafe, Barnes X, and the Nosler Partitions should give you great performance. Not so sure the Game Kings can stand that kind of velocity when encountering elk bones.

Don't think we're gonna have to worry about getting drawn for elk this year, Zeppie -

Have you read the news of the jerk New Mexico outfitter that got a federal judge in Phoenix to declare the draw in Arizona null and void because the nonresident 10% restriction for elk and Kiabab deer is unconstitutional? He has ordered the G&F not to issue any permits until the draw is non-discriminatory.

Don't think there's enough daylight between now and the early season for G&F to draw up such plans, hold the required public hearings and then get court approval.

G&F requested that he allow this year's hunt to go forward and they would develop a plan for his approval for next year. He flatly refused to consider it.

Hay Zeppelin your elk situation really sucks. Sorry about that. I really feel for you. I would hate to live in a state where you had to go thru so much to hunt an elk.

I use the 220 grain Serria GameKings in my old Rem 8 mag and dispite everyone telling me they are a fragile bullet the elk seem to fall over with a thud.

Worked good in Alaska on Moose, black bear, Brown bear, deer, and cariboo. Only complaint was on a rabbit. Darn near ruined it.

Anyway with a fine cartridge like the 338/378 that 250 should do the trick in any style bullet. That is a really nice case.

Been thinking of chambering out my 8 to an 8mm Ultra-mag. Naw it shoots better than me now. I got to pay attention to kdub and mikeg when they keep saying don't fix something that is not broke.

We got some really great elk up here in Idaho, perhaps if you get stuck without a hunt you might come up and try that big bore on some of ours. It sure is fun having one fall over. Even better when the steaks are on the grill. Man I got my mouth watering now.

Better sign off and get back to retirement. Sorry for being so long winded. You just got to put up with some of old far#s
