When Marlin talk was on the net a few of us asked Marlin why they would not offer the 336/35 and 336 / 30/30 with the straight stock as they did years past.
The answer I got was that most folks all wanted the pistol grip models.Now you see the 94 models coming with the pistol grip too.

Seems like us ol' boys with the straight grips are hanging on to the old Marlins and not buying any more.
Well I am sure one of rare birds that like the old Marlins with the straight grip and Ballard rifling, and the only reason I am not buying any more "New " Marlins , cause they not making the ones I like.

Hence the Winchesters and Browningare getting the sale.

So I guess they were right again . : :rolleyes: : Most new Marlin sales are the pistol grip models. Because the other folks need to buy a winchester or a BLR that want a straight grip.

I do love my 336/35 RC straight griped rifle made in 1954 with the ballard rifling. Every one who has shot the thing would love to have it. I am not selling and Marlin will not make new ones like it . So we are all pig headed.

Shame on you Harry! You could at least post a picture of the wonderful .35 Rem for all to drool over! See if I can get one of mine....

I have a 45/70 guide gun. At the range I wear hearing protection with this gun as well as with the .22.
Out in the bush you are not bothered by ther blast or by the recoil of this 18 1/2 " barreled rifle.
I would think the 336/35 D with the short barrel would be the same.
According to Marlin Davidsons took over two years to sell off the 336/35 D.

Now with ports, the blast from a short barreled rifle could be another matter. I have a ported 6.5x55 24 " mauser. I sure can not tell the differance when I shoot it, but , any one beside me is running as if they just got stung by a bee.

I do not have the equipment to send a picture of my rifle.
It was pretty beat up as far as the outside finsh , but inside it was as good as new . A little oil and some cold bluing brought it back to show.
It was on the bench at the gun shop were I deal , so I picked it up and said I would take it before even looking at the price tag. I knew what I was going to buy. I bought an old gun for the price of a new one. And I have been very pleased with this rifle. It is butter smooth, as it shoots groups.
Now if ever I saw a 30/30 like it, or a model 71 or 86 I would know I was in heaven . With this little 35 remington I just feel like I am.
Now I tried to get Marlin to make a CB version , and or get davidson to run a special since the 35 will soon be 100 years old, "BUT" Marlin thinks that they never sell. As a matter of fact , they say that the 336/35 is not making any money, so why would they build another .

So to all you folks reading these posts and all that has been posted on the 35 remington model 336. If your at a gun show and come across a straight griped 35 or 30/30 and the action is smooth. You see a nice crisp ballard rifled bore. just
make sure that you buy it, and never put it down for some else to see it. Like a good woman. Take good care of her 'cause you will never ever be able to replace her.

Our local gunsmith, Mark Harris of Harris Outfitters in Rolla,Mo, has made a couple of these in takedowns. A neat package...I don't remember him doing brakes though.

A couple of years ago, my wife decided she would like to go to the range with me, and bum in the woods, too. We found a reasonable Marlin 336 in 30-30 and had the barrel shortened to 16" and the magazine to 3 rounds..... cost about $100. What ever you want in a Marlin rifle can be had, go for it!!

My '54 Texan and a Win. 30/30 I cut down to 16".
I have also made a "Trapper" from a .35 Rem 336 Marlin.
ie: Changed to straight grip with square lever and shortened to 16".

This will give a rough idea of what is involved in making a short carbine.
Although the original pistol grip stock can be cut down and used, I bought a straight grip "second" from Boyds.
This gun actually shoots better than it did at 20".

I know how you feel. Personally, I like the 336A rifle configuration with longer barrel and 3/4 magazine. I saw one in 30-30, a 336 A DL, several weeks ago while browsing in a shop. It literally started whispering my name.

Almost blew it by driving home 65 miles without buying it but I did have my name on it. I was nervous all night. Drove back the next day. Paid too much ($425), I suppose. But I already love it. I have even thought about selling my pre-'64 Winnie now that I have this beauty.

Built in 1951, Ballard rifling, not drilled and tapped for scopes, wavy lines scored in top of receiver, factory sling swivel studs, minimal signs of wear and tear, etc.. Even with factory open sights it shoots nice groups.

Now if I could just run across the same thing in 35 Rem.! I love my 1972 336C in 35 Rem., but the rifle style Marlins, pistol grip and all, really trip my hammer.

Must have been a long night . I doubt I would have gone farther than to the bathroom before returning for that one.
Now your looking for a 35 Rem, and I got my ear on the track for a 30/30. I would hand in my Marlin guide quck If I saw another.

A guide rifle with a very short barrel chambered for a heavy cal , is ment to be used in an emergency , quickly by a guide in case his clients rifle fails with dangerous game ! That is a once in a life time deal ! It's not ment to be used for shooting game in the field on a daily bases as it will cause ear damage ! Unless you hunt with ear plugs in ! Every time you fire a heavy short barreled rifle without ear plugs it's muzzle blast is doing damage to your ears ! If you don't think that that 18.5 inch 45/70 barrel is loud , then maybe you already have ear damage ! JAGG

Mine was imported into the UK in 1988 i simply love this rifle its so much fun to shoot ! :) Its so short and so handy its currently fitted with a Lyman receiver sight and im working up some loads with VV N133 and 180 gn FNGC bullets got to 1746 f.p.s and no pressure to speak of....... Wonder how much velocity i can get out of this dinky little barrel ?

Slick little carbine, 45LC-MAN. I saw one at a gun show yeaterday and was very tempted, but it was just a little too rough. Although the wood on the Marlin 30 series is birch and not walnut, it is still a slick little 30-30.

Yes, a gunsmith in Austin, Texas does a very nice job. Call Hank Fleming, Gunsmith in Austin Texas at 512 445 6339. He does a very nice job by replacing wooden stock with Butler Creek synthetic, shorten barrel to 16" adds compensator, bead blasts all metal and finishes any way you want. Can do brushed caustic blue to wild camo. Highest quality and highly recommended! Tell him Tom Smith sent you.
