Looking to make a scout rifle out of a Remington model7 or a Ruger 77compact..........does anyone know where I can get a scout scope mount for one of these rifles? Or a gunsmith that does this work?

This is a question I've never given thought to.

Can't think of any scout mount made for these actions - would imagine it would require tapping of the barrel ahead of the receiver. In my area, the necessary 4 holes would run $15- $20 per hole, drilled and tapped. Mounts would be a problem due to normal taper of the barrels ahead of the chamber. Brownell's sells generic bases so gunsmiths can custom build a mount. Sounds to me a custom setup is gonna run around $150 or so, plus rings unless you already have a spare set.

I know the scout rifles look neat, but, why in the world would you want to? Both rifles are already set up for scopes mounted on the recievers. There are a lot of excellent long eye relief scopes on the market and you incur very little expense putting a set of rings and bases on them. In fact the Ruger comes with rings and costs nothing except the scope.

Now if you want to put that short rifle with the funny looking scope mount in the gunrack of that 9 foot tall pickup with the 44 inch mud runners and the red and yellow flames paint job I understand.

Gents,

I have actually been thinking along the same lines for my model 7, so I am following this thread closely.

A few things have gotten me started thinking in this direction, most notably that we are fooling around with red dots here at work, and it occurs to me that a forward mounted scope is roughly the same priniciple.

Secondly, fast handling is this gun's strong suit, and in the "scouts" that I have handled, a foward mounted scope doesn't effect its balance as much as a conventionally mounted scope. I have never had to live with a scout rifle, but this is my intial impression.

Lastly, my rifle is not all that accuratte past 100 yards, and I honestly only use it now for still hunting, and only then when the weather is poor. As such, the leupold compact 2x7 is really more scope than a fellow needs on this rifle, and I have been looking to move that onto another platform that would be more compatible.

Sounds like it is a moot point though, but I look forward to someone coming up with something, as my interest is peaked.

Have a great day, fellows.

Steve

I've found a scout mount that will fit either rifle ,it's called a Ching Ring mount - do a google search for it.

I have a scout type rifle made from a Ruger 77 MKII. The mount came from Ashley Enterprises which has changed names to XS Systems, I think. The mount has Weaver type rings. It is a tube that goes over the barrel just ahead of the action. Need a gunsmith to put it on. B Square makes a scout mount for the Model 700 Remington but I dont know about the Model 7. The B Square attaches to the rear sight holes and the front scope ring mount holes. Should be easy to put on. The easiest was to get a cheap scout is to get the Rem 700 Youth model in 308 and put on the B Square mount . Then get the XS ghost ring sights. The scout rifle concept is hard to understand until you have put a few hundred rounds through one. It is a lot easier to hit quickly. The scout is meant to be a jack-of- all trades gun that happens to be an ideal deer rifle.

If you want a Ruger Frontier, I'd get one in a hurry. I don't think it will be around any longer, if as long, as the Savage Scout was. I'm not putting down the concept, I've got one of the Savage rifles and greatly enjoy shooting it, but it doesn't seem too popular with most shooters. The Frontier, if you haven't seen it, is basically a Compact with the scout mount. With no open sights standard, and a msrp of $800, you best get one quick, it'll be gone in a year. If they could see fit to dust off the .358 Winchester reamers for this rifle, we might just have something.
