Hello All,

This is my first post to this forum, I have enjoyed reading this site, it is very informative.

I purchased a Savage 30 '06 bolt action rifle a few years ago for deer hunting. I took it to the range a few weeks ago and rid myself of the old ammunition I had laying around. I removed the bolt to clean the gun and (I'm not sure how I did this) but I managed to cock the bolt while it was out of the gun. Now I can't get it back in.

Any suggestions?

I know this is probably a ridiculous question, please excuse my newbie ignorance and insecurity

Thanks!

Sounds like you turned the cocking piece and have the bolt cocked. I have not handled a Savage bolt action that much. It may be possible to place the bottom of the bolt against a flat surface and apply pressure and then slightly turn the cocking piece to uncock it. I'll stop at a local gun shop tomorrow and look at a Savage 110 and try to duplicate the problem and corrective action. All the best...

I think that you mean you uncocked it. Look at the bottom of the bolt, there is a round button-looking thingy on it, that rides in a odd-shaped hole. You need to move that button up where it the spring is compressed again.

I'll get a picture, hang on....

OK - this is the bolt if it's wrong, ie, spring is not cocked.

and this is the bolt if it's right (cocked).

Use the blunt end of a new (unsharpened) wooden pencil or something like that and you should be able to muscle it back into the correct position.

Just about all modern bolt action rifles cock on opening (your Savage being one of them). You have managed to uncock it. What MikeG is showing and telling you is to recock the bolt. You'll be going against the firing pin spring resistance so it may take that extra muscle Mike mentioned.

I will go home and see what I can do with it.
