I have been researching the Ruger No. 1 for a while now and have gotten many opinion on it. I was about to buy it in a .308 when it became unavailable at my local store. I called around and no one seems to have it in .308 and they all would need to special order it for me. One of my local stores has it in 30-06 at a great price. Ahh, the classic 30-06. Now I know people have debated the whole .308 /vs/ 30-06 things forever and ever so I do not want to start one of those discussions again (even though I have a feeling I just did). Bottom line, I am going to Colorado for Elk next year and the year after that, I will be going to Alaska for blacktail, caribou and even possibly moose. Will the 30-06 be more then adequate for hunting purposes? Not to worry, I have a S/W 44 for back up in case of a bear. Also, has anyone shot the 30-06 no. 1? I know many of you have shot other calibers.

that will be a fine rifle. I have used one in .25-06, the 30-06 is of course better suited for elk and such.

The 30-06 is a good all round cartridge, nothing wrong with that in a Ruger #1. Enjoy.... :)

No whitetailed deer in Alaska, I'm sure you meant blacktail deer. ;)

The 30/06 in a Ruger No.1 should serve you very well for moose, caribou, and deer (throw in a black bear and wolf while you are here!).

Ruger makes four versions (I think) of the No.1 in 30/06. The S (sights and Alex Henry Forearm, standard weight 22" barrel), the B (standard weight 26" barrel, no sights, and beavertail forearm), the A (very similar to the S, but lightweight barrel), and the RSI (full length forearm, sights, and lightweight 20" barrel). I'm not sure if they are making the A models anymore or not. Of course, they have the '06 chambered in the stainless/laminated version of the No.1 also.

I love hunting with my No.1's. They are well balanced, quick handling, and the stocks fit me very well. I've never really liked the "B" model, the beavertail forearm never handled that well for me and I like sights on my rifles, just because.

Though I've never had a No.1 in 30/06, I've witnessed the '06 used on lots of game and it will do the job on moose and smaller animals very well.

Thanks for the correction, blacktail/whitetail. I fixed it in my post. Here in Maryland, we have White Tail and Sika deer so I'm used to typing whitetail when talking deer. Thanks for your reply. I am picking it up on Thursday night unless I get some really bad feedback that starts my mind churning again. P.S. How about some yellowtail ?

The venerable '06 will serve you well for what you have in mind. Bullet weight selection will be the biggest consideration. The #l should be adequate to handle the 165 to 200 grainers with great accuracy. Not sure of those on either end of this range.

The #1's I've owned in the past were very accurate firearms (both in 25-06) once a thin shim was placed under the forearm tips.

Wow, a well balanced guy choosing not to go down the magnum path, my hat is off to you! Yes, a #1 in 06 would make a superb rifle, better than most on the market. I had a 1A in 7*57 mauser for a long time. Talk about a delight in every way, well balanced, Alex Henry forearm, could be handloaded to surprising performance, and just generally a beautiful firearm! Go get that sucker!! Or I will!!

I sure like my #1. I bought it just because of the fondle factor. It's in 243 so I got it mainly for varmits, but might take it deer hunting this fall. It's not as (bench rest accurate) as my sons rem 700 bull bbl, but still probably more accurate than I can shoot. It just feels good to shoot and to pack.

Go get it. You will never regret it.

Not that there is anything at all wrong with a 30-06 but my uncle who I go hunting with most of the time strongly suggested I go with the no. 1 in a 300 WSM so when we go to Alaska, I am a litle better prepared. So I figured what the heck, I'm still getting the no. 1 just a little more power. I'm a large guy, 6'7" 270 lbs so a little kick to the shoulder should not be a problem. I'm always open to suggestions and comments so this conversation does not have to end here.

Use good bullets. That will make more of a difference than a few FPS among the various .30 cal cartridges.

Have fun and good luck!
