I am new to the forum, so hi guys! I would like to know, if
anyone has any experience using the Government issue
powders ie WC852, WC846. I bought an 8lb jug of the WC
852 and used it for loads in my Remington Model 700 in
7mm Rem Mag. I found excellent results loading 60gr of
this powder shooting Nosler Ballistic Silver Tips in 140gr. The
thing I really liked besides the MOA 5 shot groups at 100yrds
and the 2400fps out of the muzzle (chronographed) was the
consistency of powder charges. Metering was so very sweet
with this powder. I am planning on getting a jug of the WC846
to try with my new 7mm-08. Has anyone else had any experience with these powders?

Welcome to the board, Bgrivrs - Hope you will join us in all the various forums here.

Have never used the surplus powders. Always used the cannister grade, myself.

That 2400 fps sounds a mite slow for a 140 grainer coming out of a 7 RM. My Ruger 7 RM churns up around 3200 fps with that bullet weight.

Yeah, that was my mistake. I was getting 3200 even out of
that load. Sorry for the misquote.

Bgrivrs,

I've shot several jugs of the WC852 over the years, and you're right it's great stuff, shoot it with heavy bullets in the '06's. Have used WC872, WC820, WC680 but never WC846, so can't help you there.

However, within their respective applications each of these milsurp powders have proven to be outstanding performers and bargains as well!

I would like to try some of that..could you recommend a source? I have been using A2230C in my .223/ 30-30, 30-06 and .308 with excellent results...the stuff is cheap too...but need something for heaver bullets...maybe WC 852 is a good answer....a source would be appreciated...

On the powders at www.gibrass.com it says "WC820 This is a ball powder which can be loaded using Hodgdon H110 data. and WC860 A ball powder which can be loaded using Hodgdon H870 or AA8700 data."

Does this mean i can use the data in the reloading manual for H110 for the WC820, and the data for H870 for the WC860, this seems a bit to easy, LOL.

Is there one of those powders that would be good for loading shotshells (1 1/8 oz at about 1200 fps)?

You can start with that data, but would be advised to use a chronograph; some people have reported WC820 as burning faster than the usual H110/WW296 lot.

About the only shotshell application for a powder that slow is the 410.

There's a couple of other powders on that site which are supposed to be the same as current Accurate Arms #2 and #7. I have a jug of the #2 surplus and it works fine. Check the accurate manual for shotshell applications for those two.
