Hello all. I'm new to this group but am a shooter of 40 years fiddling. Recently bought a 10 acre tract that will be my new homesite and private range, and because of population density in the region, I'm reluctant to shoot much high-power rifle. I have two 870's, and am looking for a platform on which to build a dedicated slug gun. I want to cast my own sabot slugs, load my own and enjoy tweaking to get the most accuracy I can from these traditionally "coarse" weapons. What would be a good shotgun to begin with? A rifled barrel is a given I understand, but other than that, what direction should I take? It's time for a new addition to my small "collection", so input from you experts would be welcomed. Thanks!

I have a pair of Remingtom 870s that I set up to shoot slugs in shotgun-only areas. I mounted B-Square saddle mounts and placed 2 1/2 scopes on them and they shoot well. I have no idea how to get to a 1 MOA slug gun, but wish you well in your quest. All the best...

Brother bought one that was close to 1MOA with factroy loads out of the box....but the bad news is (1) they don't make it anymore (2) it's the LEAST fast for follow up shots of any shotgun I've used (3) they were not cheap. Borwning made some of these fully rifled A-bolt's in 12ga. (but no longer). Looks like a fat barreled varmint rifle with a pregnant magazine.

Not in the "theme" of slug guns... needs to be handled like a vamint rifle; rapid follow up shots are not in the offering and it's a tad heavy for woods walking.

Now as odd *** it seems, the simple singles shot break action has nearly the accuracy....is also fat, surprizingly heavy (from the thick walled barrel), and no repeat shots. Believe with some load hunting, trigger work, and perhaps a bit of simple tweaking it may offer near 1MOA accuracy with some offerings.

BTW: 1moa is a strange goal for a 12ga. slug gun. Not that hunting up accuracy isn't a fine goal in itself, but condiering the game the gun the load is designed for and the limits of ballistics, perhaps that's more accuacy than is needed (but an afternoon spent busting ground squirrels with 12ga. slugs does sound like fun).

Thanks to you both. Since posting, I've learned of the Savage 210F bolt gun with button-rifled barrel. Looks like just the ticket for a dedicated slug gun platform. My gun interests have often run to the unusual, and I always enjoyed reloading shotgun shells more than metallic cartridges. Easier to handle with hamhands like mine. There are some very intriguing slug molds out there I'd enjoy trying too...

I know my gunsmith rebarreled a savage bolt gun and it would shoot 3 shots in 1.5 to 2.5 inches at 200 yards. The ammunition was handloaded CCS sabots with 325 grain barnes bullets. My Ithaca 37 has fired groups at 100 yards as small as .750" for three shots. the barrel is custom rifled and the rifling profile is different than any production gun.

Oh my gosh!! That's the sort of fun I'm looking for!

I can say that from personal experience that the H&R Ultra Slug Gun with it's heavy bull barrel will definantly shoot 1-inch groups at 100 yards and do it with boring consistency....

My Ithaca 37 was built by Chris Young at Gun Servicing. He is not able to take any work right now. His Ammunition is available in several varieties, both 12 and 20 gauge. My favorite round is his 2 3/4 Improved with the 325 grain Barnes copper bullet. It drops only 8 inches at 150 yards when sighted 1 inch high at 50 YDS, and zeroed at 100 YDS. I personally have 21 deer taken with this gun and load combination. My last deer was at a laser measured 141 YDS. The doe dropped with one round high through both shoulders. The slug expanded, and was not recovered.
I can help you with the specifics of building a slug gun, Email me and I will try to help.

Well have you any groups to report? I have not checked the zero on my slug gun yet, but deer season in coming. I am curious as to how you made out. Greg
