I think I would like to rebarrel this gun. I checked around and have come up with some really big numbers. Here is my ? I bought this old gun in a bar from a fellow that should never had it in the first place. It showed some wear, but was a great shooter, after it was cleaned up and the copper out. Now 30 yrs latter and many rnds it groups are good enough for a Antelope or a Whitetail as compared to field mice same distance. Can one just get a decent barrel 1:8, fit into the stock that will shoot, with out paying out 800-1000. Or just trade it in for another ?

Good grief that sounds like a lot of money to rebarrel a commercial '98 mauser...... I believe that is what the Parker-Hale is (brother in law has one).

You can get ready-to-install barrels from Midway, I think they have some on sale for less than a hundred bucks, although they are short-chambered and someone would need to finish cutting the chamber (and check for headspace). But you ought to be able to rebarrel several of them for $800, even if you had to buy the gages and reamers.....

Local gunsmith charges me right at $225 for rebarreling. That includes barrel, chambering and headspacing.

Jim I just priced an older rifle a friend of mine has in a 25-06. It's barrel is rusted and he wants to get it ready for use in the near future. To rebarrel with a good Douglas barrel your looking at under $275 dollars including labor. Stainless and fluted barrels are about a $200 dollars more etc.

I had one of those Midway barrels (for less than $100) in 7x57mm fitted to a sporterized '98 Mauser and blued (for less than $150). Hope this helps. All the best...

I've got a Parker-Hale I had rebarrelled to .35 Whelen AI with a premium Douglas tube. The price, with a Redding 3-die set was less than half of your upper number. That included polishing and blueing of the entire action and barrel, as well as fitting a new stock. I'm talking about a premium polish and blue. The whole package is nice and shoots very well. I'd look for another smith. This was a few years ago, but that price would be an outrage at any normal shop unless you where requesting something VERY special.
