I would like to hear all the facts, moans and groans of what folks on the forum have to say about this .264 Winchester magnum caliber please.

I have do have several calibers in my collection but never seemed to latch on to a real nice .264 Winchester magnum for some reason or another. I would know like to fill that void in my collection but would like to get responses from those on the forum who have had actual experience with this caliber hunting and shooting etc. Thanks fella's!

Won't get any complaints about the 264 from me....
It's a nice, flat shooting, open country rifle, when properly set up. That means a barrel length of 24" or 26", IMO. A 22" barrel (or less) won't give you the velocity the cartridge can produce. And the shorter barrels will give a muzzle blast you'll long remember....
The 264 needs very slow powder to do its best. H870, and the similar AA 8700 work very, very well in this caliber.

All the hype of yesteryear about the .264 WM being a "barrel burner" has surely gone by the wayside with the advent of all the Ultra's, Short Mag's, etc., being produced today. It would be regarded a mediocre round by comparison.

Always remember the NIB Winchester M70 pre '64 Westerner I bought in 1972 and gave to a friend in Wyoming for his gracious hosting of my friends and me during several years of deer/antelope hunting out of his place. It has accounted for elk, deer and antelope by the droves since then. A fine rifle and great cartridge.

I had a Win model 70 that wouldn't shoot factory stuff. Handloads were another story--- many dime sized groups pasted into my load data notebooks. If you are looking for something that shoots flat then this is your cartridge!!
Recoil is more of a sharp quick crack; sort of like a 30-06 in a mountain rifle. It's managable, but can get a little old at the bench.
One other thing to mention is to keep an eye on the barrel temp heating up. This is NOT a rapid fire type cartridge by any means. I would have to let the barrel cool off after just one 3-shot group for at least 7 minutes.
