Here's the situation. Bass Pro Shops fall hunting classic starts this weekend. They have 2 package guns on sale for $300 - Remington 710 and Savage 111 package gun w/o the Accu-trigger. Originally I was going to go with the 710 because it had the detachable magazine, but now the Savage package has the detachable magazine. (The 'low-end' Savages I'd looked at before did not have a detachable magazine.)
Looking for comments and experience with either of these guns.
P.S. I have $80 between a Bass Pro Gift Card and rewards points, so I don't need any suggestions for any used guns instead. And since my big-game hunting is limited here in TN to whitetails, I don't need to pay a bunch of money for fancy wood just to pull the trigger 5 times a year at most (not including range time).

Savage is much more versatile, you can change barrels pretty easily with them. 710 is pretty much 'use it as it comes to you' which is not necessarily a bad thing for all hunters, most won't wear out a rifle in a lifetime anyway.
If one fits you much better than the other, that might be a sign! I'd get the savage myself, as I like to tinker with stuff.....

Either one will serve your purpose. I used to think the 710 was junk but since I met some shooters who actually own one, my position on them has changed. Aside from being ugly as sin, I've heard that the main faults with the 710 are the rough action and the fact you can't rebarrel it. But they're supposed to be decent shooters.
I like Savages. They make good guns at a reasonable price. I live in what could be called an "economically-challenged" town, and a lot of hunters can't afford a real fancy gun. A lot of my best friends started hunting with Savages. I read somewhere that they often have extraction problems, but nobody I know has ever had any problems with them. Many folks claim they're the most accurate "out-of-the-box" rifle for the money. Actually, our Bi-Mart has that synthetic 111 package deal in 270, and I thought it looked like a pretty nice gun.
If I was in the same position, I'd take the Savage without hesitation.
Go with the Savage - you won't be sorry!

Well, I'm going to go against the grain here and get the 710. Went to Bass Pro and got to hold both of them and I like the 710 better. The stock on the Savage didn't fit as well as the 710. May be giving up some accuracy, but I think I'll like the 710 better.
