I've got this Marlin 44 mag with factory iron sights but would like to be able to install a quick detachable scope mount. Ideally, when I take the scope off, I could still use the iron sights.

I did install a red dot scope with an aluminum weaver style base, but it is not detachable. This weaver base has a center channel cut out of it so if I took the scope off, the base doesn't completely block the view of the factory sights.

I'm considering trying the Warne Maxima Steel base(s) with the Maxima Quick Detachable Rings. According to the Warne website, they make both a one piece base and a set of two piece bases. These steel bases do not have a center channel cutout and are probably stronger, but they may block the view of the factory sights.

Has anyone installed these Warne bases on a Marlin? Do they block the view of the iron sights? Do you recommend the one piece or two piece bases? What height QD rings are best?

thanks

This isn't quite what you want, but it works for me. You may need medium or high scope rings.

Jack,

Thanks for the link. Really I'm just looking for Ideas and the combo receiver sight / scope mount seems like a good one. Too bad my receiver isn't tapped. I'd have to find a gunsmith.

I've never shot with a receiver sight. Sounds like they got quite an advantage over the factory sights. I usually use a scope for shooting, but want to try this Cowboy Pistol Silhouette Match that requires open sights.

Joe,
I don't know if you solved your problem or not, but Leupold quick release (QRW) rings will attach to that Weaver style base and allow you to quickly remove the scope for open sight usage. As you've discovered, once the scope has been removed, the open sights can be seen over the base. I've used this setup for years on a 45-70 without problems. Reattaching the scope brings it real close to the previous impact point as well. The feature comes in handy if it starts raining.

Jayhawker,

I haven't purchased anything yet, but I'm leaning towards keeping the Weaver rail in place and getting either the Leupold QRW rings or the Warne Maxima Quick Detach Rings. If I take off the scope, I can still see down ther Weaver rail and view the factory sights, although the Weaver rail does make the rear sight harder to acquire visually. A receiver sight probably would give a better picture though.

The Warne rings seem to be a bit less expensive then the Leupold, and are shaped a little different, but I've heard good things about both brands. Anyone have a preference over these two?

thanks,

Joe
