The .376 Steyr is an interesting cartridge. It is very close to being a stretched version of the .284 Winchester. The rim is a little larger (.496" vs .473"), the base is the same at .500"-.501" and it is longer (2.36" vs 2.17) but will cycle in an '06 length action.
I have no use for the .376 Steyr because I don't hunt anything that can't be taken with the 30-06. However, it was interesting to note that the brass case, when shortened somewhat, will cycle in any lever gun with the 30-30 rim size.
The lever gun possibilities are 7MM/376 (7-30 Waters), 30/376 (30-30), 358/376 (.356 Winchester), 375/376 (.375 Winchester), 444/376 (.444Marlin) and 458/376. When shortened to cycle in a Marlin lever action rifle, the powder capacity and OAL will be about the same as the .450 Marlin, sans belt.
Here is my question:
Does anyone know of any problems that I would encounter in shortening the .376 Steyr case (2.36") to 38-55 length (2.085) and rechambering a Marlin Cowboy 38-55 to 38-55/.376? I intend to shoot the Barnes Original 255 grain .377" bullet and some of my Beartooth Bullets 250 grain .379" GC hard cast bullets.
