I have an old "Herter's Vari-Choke with Recoil Eliminator" for a 20 gauge it is still new in the box, my question is, "is it safe to use this on a gun shooting the modern plastic wads?

[Yep it is totally safe to use the Herters choke with modern shells. Get you a nice 37 featherweight 20 and have barrel cut to 18 1/2 inches and have choke installed. Gives you about a 21 in barrel. Super light, Superfast, Deadly bird and bunny gun. I know, I have one with a polychoke set up like this.

I already have 3 different 20ga shotguns, now I just need to decide what one to put it on, LOL
I have a H&R that is in a fitted case with 3 of the 4 barrels it is supposed to have (16 ga missing, would like to find a replacement sometime.) the 20ga barrel is cyl. bore 26 1/2 inches long, but if I put it on this one it wont fit in the fitted case unless I alter the case.
I have a FIE with changeable barrels 30/30 and 20ga. 28 inch full choke.
And I have a clip fed, bolt action, Wards Western Field has 14M and 215A on it (not sure which is the model number), 24 inch with a screw on Mossberg full choke (have not been able to find any other chokes for it, so it's shot as full choke or no choke). I am thinking of putting it on this gun, or maybe the FIE, if I have it put on the FIE I can just take the barrel in and have the work done, if I put it on the Wards I will have to probably pay extra for barrel removal and replacement, and having the last 2 inches or so cut off to get rid of the existing threads.
