I finally found a Browning 92 lever gun for sale. I decided a few months back that I wanted one in either 357 or 44 Magnum. These rifles are seldom found for sale in this part of the country. I had about given up the idea. I visited my local gun shop the other day, and I couldn't believe what was behind the counter; a Browning 92 in 44 Magnum. The rifle is in beautiful condition with nice bluing and wood. I negotiated a deal and brought the little gem home. A thorough cleaning inside and out revealed no problems. I can't wait to get to the range and shoot this "little brother" to my 1886 Extra Light Winchester 45-70.
Does anyone have one of these? How do you like it? Favorite load? All replys appreciated.

You POOR bugger! Another hapless soul taken in with a Japanese made version of an American classic. I feel for you brother....
But, you know, my sympathy just isn't enough! I feel it is my duty to help you! So, I will be happy to take that rifle off your hands and use it to prop up a corner of an old hay wagon I have in the barn. It's the least I can do!
But seriously, congrats on a rifle I have always kicked myself for never getting when I had a chance. Let us all know how the accuracy works out. I have comments from a local gun smith suggesting it isn't any too good but that was with commercial jacketed bullet ammo. I expect a proper diameter cast bullet will make this little sweetheart sing!

longhunter... I found a NEW IN BOX B92 in .357 magnum on the internet a couple of years back. I paid a princely sum for it, but WOW, what a great rifle! I'd love to have one in .44 mag. Nice find my friend. Do you mind me asking what you paid for it? I think I paid about $750 for mine. I believe it was made in the late 70's early 80's and has no safety. NIB after all these years was really something to find. I had a cowboy rifle specialist do an action job on it and it is the slickest, smoothest lever rifle I've ever seen. Good find!

LongHunter,
I do not own one but have loaded for and fired hundreds of rounds in my friend's Browning 92 / 44 mag. He lives in Sandpoint, ID which is in the Idaho panhandle just a few miles from the Canadian border.
The load I use is the Hornady 240 grain hollow point and a max load of H110 (reference Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading, third edtion) This load is potent and in the light little 92, it kicks more than a Browning BLR '81 in .308. The BLR has a recoil pad but the 92 does not. That may have a little to do with the perceived recoil, but not much.
You are really going to enjoy that Browning 92. I have to go now so I can wipe the drool off of the Hornady book sitting in my lap.

Update:
I was able to get the 92 on the range today. I only fired one loading, consisting of 240 grain XTPs, A max charge of Win. 296, Starline case and CCI 350 primer, COL 1.600". I am quite pleased with the 50 yard accuracy so far (2" or so with the issued open sights from a rest). I feel the rifle could do much better. I don't shoot "irons" as well as I once did. So far, I really like this little gun. I am very interested in working up a good cast bullet load, I just had the XTP load handy.
I actually traded a Browning BAR 22 rimfire rifle and some cash for the 92. I have about $350 to $400 in it. I think that's a pretty good deal. I understand the 357 models bring a 30% premium. I would love to have one of those! For now, I'm happy with the 44. I just have some work to do with developing a hog load. I intend to use a cast bullet for this task.
These Browning 92s are slick little leverguns! This one makes a nice companion piece to my 1886 "Japchester" 45-70. They both are well made. :D

Longhunter,
The B-92's are a great little gun. I have one in .357 and I love it. My doesn't like standard length .38 special rounds though. It will feed long for caliber .38's or regular .357's great.
It is slick and smooth on the action and good looking to boot. Hope that you enjoy your's as much as I do mine.

I understand these leverguns have a good following in SASS circles. I'm not into that sport, I just wanted a well made 44 magnum carbine to hunt with on occasion. I think the price was good, shucks, I'd do it again! I'm very happy so far with this rifle I intend to work up some good cast bullet loads when I get the time.. :D
