After studying the detailed report of one bear encounter and one fall moose, I conclude that the S&W 500 does a satisfactory job within Area 14-B. The freezer has some moose for the winter and now it is time to go rack hunting on the Yukon. That .500 put down the animals quickly a decisively.
I could get to enjoy this but I've got too many years invested in rifles to give up rifle shooting altogether. Also, you get a lot of range out of a rifle and that can be half the fun. In addition, on the upper slopes you really can't beat a high-powered rifle in the 300 mag - 338 range. They really help when you want to "reach out and touch something".
I deeply regret that sheep will not be on my winter menu although my legs have been cheering.
Has anyone gone for goat? What is the status of goat hunting on the Kenai Peninsula? It seems like an ideal (?) location for those of us close to Anchoragua. How difficult is it to get a permit? Any suggestions on a guided trip to shorten the scouting time?

The area out of Day Harbor (just west of Seward) seems to have a high success rate for goats. There's also the mountains between Girdwood and Twentymile that holds lots of goats. Expect company from a lot of other hunters.

I've been applying for goat permits for 2 areas on the Kenai for the last 10 years or so, and have yet to get drawn. I'm not sure what the probabilities are for being drawn, but guess I'm just not a lucky person when it comes to drawing hunts. Never been drawn for anything. I always put in for 3 sheep, 3 goats, 2 muskox, and 3 bison. Of course the sheep area draws I put in for, along with the musk ox and bison, are well below 1% success in being drawn. If you are a sheep hunter, how can you not apply for the TMA and Unit 14's for sheep, though?

For drawing success rates, ADF&G has posted records from the past few years at http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/permits/stats.cfm

Most of the goat areas accessible by road on the Kenai, at least near Hope to Seward are drawing areas for the fall. Appears to be some registration hunts for November if the quota is not met in select locations.
