After studying the detailed report of one bear encounter and one fall moose, I conclude that the S&W 500 does a satisfactory job within Area 14-B. The freezer has some moose for the winter and now it is time to go rack hunting on the Yukon. That .500 put down the animals quickly a decisively.
I could get to enjoy this but I've got too many years invested in rifles to give up rifle shooting altogether. Also, you get a lot of range out of a rifle and that can be half the fun. In addition, on the upper slopes you really can't beat a high-powered rifle in the 300 mag - 338 range. They really help when you want to "reach out and touch something".
I deeply regret that sheep will not be on my winter menu although my legs have been cheering.
Has anyone gone for goat? What is the status of goat hunting on the Kenai Peninsula? It seems like an ideal (?) location for those of us close to Anchoragua. How difficult is it to get a permit? Any suggestions on a guided trip to shorten the scouting time?
