My brother just received his new Springfield Arms .308 Garand in the tanker (short barrel) version.
He called me up immediately and asked me to come over and look at the bore.
The gun has not been fired unless it was tested at the factory.
About 2" from the muzzle,it looked like a 3/16" long black face whisker was lying in the bottom of the bore. He had tried to remove it with patches, bore swab, and an all-brass brush to no avail.
When you raise your head slightly, you can see it has depth. It is about a land and 3/4's long and it has a slight pitch to it..Not having a good way to reference the width,I'd estimate it's at least 10 mils wide.
Not having a good borescope,it appears to be a deep tool mark or crack.
He called Springfield Arms and they asked him to return it to the factory.
Has anybody else heard of similar cases of Springfield Arms products.
I don't know if these barrels are swaged,broached,or ?
We had several swagers in our plant that we used to make "thimble tubes" which are used as guides for the control rods in a nuclear reactor. These tubes had final dimensional tolerances of +/- 0.0004 so it was a closely controlled process. I have seen interior defects like this and in most cases it was due to material defects or a dirty mandrel or lube.

I'm sure you thought of this but you aren't by chance seeing the gas port are you? It's about 2 inches in and would be on the bottom. With a regular bore light, it looks like a dark shadow.

Lumberjack,
Now you have me wondering!
I didn't notice a gas port and didn't think to look for one as I have never used a garand.
How wide (front-to-back,transverse to the bore) would these ports normally be?
This thing also appears to have some slight pitch to it - not 90 degrees to the bore, but more like 75-80.
I guess we better take another look to it.
Thanks!

Remove the gas cylinder lock screw, the gas cylinder lock and then slide off the gas cylinder. This will expose the gas port. Put your bore light against the port and look into the barrel. I have included an exploded view, hope this helps you out.

Thanks,Lumberjak.
I dug out my NRA booklet on the M1 last night and called my brother this morning. He said he sent the gun back to Springfield Arms on Monday.
We may get some egg on our face over this if what we were seeing was the gas port.
In fairness to Springfield Arms,I'll report the result when we get it.

I like eggs, but not all over my face!
Springfield Arms called my brother today to tell him that what we saw was,in fact, the gas port.
Springfield Arms evidently has excellent customer service representatives - ship a gun on Monday and have a response on Thursday!
