View Full Version : How'd you get your handle?

This is just for kicks and is something I will often do on a new [to me] board to learn a bit more about the denizens. That said, since many of you have firearm, hunting, competition, or military/civil service/occupation related handles it'd be interesting to hear about how you got 'em. Did you make it up, or was it "hung" on you? I've seen some pretty interesting nicks out there, so 'fess up! ;)

Mine is not gun related at all, but a nickname that I acquired my freshman year of college, or a derivation of.
Living in the dorms I would put witty quotes/lyrics/pictures up on my door (door dec) I do not know why I did, just something to do (I think just to piss off the other residents :)) Well I guess my door decs were controversial so people would write crude things on them. One guy in particular wrote "Jason is a son of a b****" Except he wrote the 'J' like a '9' so it would be '9ason' and he wrote the 'b' like a '6'. So when my friends saw it they started calling me '9ason' making fun of the guy who didn't know letters from numbers. 9ason then became 9 and then 9r, other variations are nineason, the__9, niner, etc. just depends on where I am and what rules that place has for nicknames.

Swany is short for Swanson my last name, my father got hung with the same nickname. I have been car pooling and working in the same area with a fella by the name of Ed my first name is Ed so it keeps it simple elsewise we would both answer. Used to be known as Telegrapher, this was back when I was into ham radio but has nothing to do with that. 1973 we up in Morley, Mich hunting whitetail on a potato farm and had doe permits for that land. We were taking a break at noon, and some of the guys noticed a herd diagonal across a 40 and started to kid me about being a benchrest shooter and as good as I was I should be able to shoot one of them. Guess it got the better of me, so I lined one up offhand aimed 8inches above it's head which was straight up. Took my shot, seven people seen the dust kick up behind the deer and proclaimed a miss. My ex father in law was hunting the woods edging this property and was glassing the deer. He walked out of the woods and said you shot her come and get her. Five of us paced that off and came up with an average 534 paces. My father in law called me telegrapher proclaiming the only way to get a bullet that far was to send it. That handle stuck with me until I outlived most of them.

In 1913 or so my grandparents got married. Now that Granddad was a man with responsibilities, cowboying in the panhandle of Oklahoma just did not pay enough to support a wife and any children that might result, so he had get a better job.
They moved to New Mexico were the Santa Fe was laying track. Granddad being a rather large Irishman it was his job to carry the cross ties from the flat car to the point they were laying track. He set up Grandmother on a little spread outside of town with a few chickens and cows. So when Granddad got paid he'd come home and they would go into town to the general store for supplies.
During one of these trips to town Granddad struck up a conversation with an old fella ,scruffy is what Grandmother called him. Some how the conversation got around to Grandmother being out at the place alone without any firearms, because they could not afford any, being newly weds and such.
Since the Mexican revolution had ended and there were numerous occasions where Mexicans came across the border for a little neighborly rape and robbery, the scruffy old fella was outraged that Grandmother was alone and unarmed.
So he went over to his horse pulled out a single shot Winchester, pulled a box of cartridges from the saddle bags and gave them to Grandmother. He told her to keep the rifle until she didn't need any more, or if he needed it he'd come and get it.
At some point in time Grandmother, in the morning, saw a couple of sombreos out by the ranch gate. So like any straight thinking woman she lifted up the rifle and shot the men out from under the hats and went about her chores. When Granddad got home he buried them and told the local law man. Shooting Mexicans didn't cause the law any problems, may have earned her a good citizenship citation.
Seems this old fella had buffalo hunted, worked for the Army, rode in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and went by the name Arkypete.
My aunt is still waiting for him to come by and pick up the rifle.

Wow, what great stories. Especially SWANY and ARKYPETE! Great stuff! Keep 'em comin'! NINER: Hey Operator, you never gave us the origins of your nick. Yeah, you're right. Fair's fair I guess. OPERATOR is actually a second to GUNNER (there's already a GUNNER on this forum), but they come from the same period. Back in the eighties I got myself tangled up in various silly and nafarious exploits for the US Navy, and we were all required to adopt a radio call sign. Traditionally one's handle is bestowed, or "hung" on one by the rest of the guys in the outfit, so you're at their mercy. As a newbie I quickly got two nicks hung on me; GUNNER and PUKER (I couldn't step one foot into a helicopter without hurling in those days. This does not go over real big with the crew chief. :o) The choice was real obvious, I was not gonna be called PUKER for the rest of my career! But then GUNNER became confusing in certain situations, and since I had a rep for being kinda hard on equipment the techies would gripe and complain. They used to say that there were two kinds of people; technicians and operators - technicians fixed things and operators broke things. I broke things. Hence: Operator. It just kinda stuck after that. Somehow it's just not as "cool" once you know the back story, huh? :D That's OK, my kidz love to remind me that I'm old and un-cool now anyway!

Gents,
I was late for a Command and Staff, because I was with my guys in the woods instead of coming in early to polish my boots and scrub my fingernails the night prior, as the rest of my peers evidently had done.
The XO had started the meeting when I walked through the door, and he looked over at me, still camouflaged, wearing all of my rig, none too pleasant smelling, and remarked, “Gentlemen, the mighty white hunter returnth.” I’m not sure if he intended it as a compliment, but I sure took it like one.

My daughters are both near thirty years. Dad was the sometimes grumpy, preferred reading, working and spending time hunting and shooting, who answered every question with no, according to them.
Now I've got three grandsons, to the oldest I'm the grandfather from **** who answers any statement with 'Not in this life time!' The other two boys I'm a favorite playmate, we throw rocks, get muddy and dirty, we learned to spit, whiz behind trees all to the horror of their mothers.
So I've become 'cool' to the grandsons.

I found an engraved 1894 Marlin in 32-20 cal in a field while I was stationed in Washington. ( Back in the 50's ) Stock was broken and full of brass tacks, so I rebuilt it and made a maple stock and fore end and refinished it. Wife said I spent more time with the old gun than I did with her. but for a long time whenever we moved into a new home, ( Military Transfers ) it was the first thing hung on the wall in the front room. Now it hangs above the rear View Mirror of the Motorhome. Even my cell phone number is 1894. Wife always referred to the Marlin as our third child.

Now that we have become full time RVer's I had to buy a 20 ft trailer to convert into a sewing room and wash room, so I could take over two of the closets and convert them into gun storage.( Can only get 30 long guns guns in each )but thr bottom halves will store all the handguns and accessories. Mine is self inflicted. I like doing odd things to guns. The model that really stretches my imagination is the CZ52 rifle. I have put several into M14 stocks, I made a sheet metal "lower" for one with a full barrel shroud and underfolder (looks like a mongrel AK / sten mutt) and I even made a complete "receiver" for one that looks like a miniature 1919 / Bren mutt.

I've been trying to accumulate the needed parts (cheaply) put put together a cz in 357 magnum. A buddy of mine did one in 300 Savage but it is necessary to seat the bullets very deep. I did one over to 223 and got it to run with reasonable reliability.

I do have plans for a camo painted, raised VW pickup though. If it ever happens I'll post the pics
Gatofeo
10-01-2004, 10:27 AM
How'd I get the name, "Gatofeo?"
Welllllll, I was raised in Spokane (Washington). One day, while enroute to Seattle (300 miles west of Spokane), I got stranded in Snoqualmie Pass in a blizzard.
The large van in front of me held an all-girl topless accordion playing band.
In the trunk of the Gatmobile I had spare food and a few bottles of brandy, so I got friendly with the accordion players. :D
Gatofeo means, "ugly cat" in Spanish. I can't go into the details of how I earned my name during those four days in the blizzard ... I'd get booted from here ... :D
That's one version of how I got the name, Gatofeo. Here's another one:
When I was a reporter in northern Idaho I adopted a stray cat in front of the newspaper. Though he had a different name, I used to call him "Gatofeo" at times, as a joke.
The very first night I went into a chat room, out of curiosity, I was forced to adopt a nom de net, as it were.
I tried to enter variations of my name, but they were all taken. Even my cat's name was taken. But when I tried Gatofeo, it was accepted. So, it's been Gatofeo for more than six years now.
My old cat had to be put down a few years ago, he'd grown so feeble. He was the nicest, most behaved and affectionate cat I ever had. I miss him. So, I kept Gatofeo as a name in his memory.
Now, pick whichever version you prefer.
Kanuck
10-01-2004, 11:57 AM
I chose the name Kanuck because, you guessed it!, I'm Canadian. Not only am I Canadian, I am an unabashed patriot, serving as an officer in the Canadian Forces. Although I am Gunner/Bird Gunner by training, I have been relegated to a position as a Staff Officer. I hope all the real soldiers out there will still speak to me!
I spell it with a K rather than the proper Canuck as an hommage to Mr. Pat Buchanan, an American politician who made a reference to "Soviet Canuckistan" which I found amusing. I corrected the spelling since K is found more often than C in names from the Evil Empire.
Suffice it to say that I like my American brethern much more than Mr. Buchanan seemed to like us Canadians.

Using the same user name for everything is a bit risky from a computer security point of view. You might want to talk to your system administrator about changing your corporate user name now that you have told everyone what it is.

Got four kids. The first two wore me out on "Daddy", so the next two were told to call me something else. The neighbors picked up on it, and pretty soon I was either "Sarge" or "Papajohn" to my fellow officers.
All my nieces and nephews call me "Juncle Ohnnie", at the behest of a silly sister in law. If you look up "Dysfunctional" in the dictionary, our family portrait is next to the definition.

Incidently, I always think people probably read it as I'm a cowboy who is a gun nut, not a nut for cowboy guns.

el borak
09-23-2006, 07:16 PM
My name is from a character created by Robert E. Howard (also the creator of Conan the Barbarian).
Its been a little while since I read the stories of El Borak, but I believe he was a Texas gunslinger who went to the Middle East (Afghanistan area) in the early 1900s. He became famous as sort of a bandit and a very good swordsman. El Borak is Afghanni (I think) for The Swift.
Of all Howard's characters, El Borak really stuck out to me because not only was he strong and good with gun and sword, he was also very smart and used tactics, where some of the other Howard characters used pure force.

Like the formations found in caves?
Was a spelunker in my 20's...had to travel a good distance to find any good caves (I live where there isn't any exposed rock anywhere), but a couple of buddies an I would gt out (well..get in) four or five trips a year. Am still thin, but back then I was skinny...and that's not a bad thing for that sport.
But...unless it was on a subconcious level...that's not the reason for the name.

leverite
09-23-2006, 10:16 PM
Leverite is as very special mineral. If you're out prospecting with a knowledgeable geologist and you pick up a piece, he will tell you to "leverite there where you found it". Similar to an "indian love stone", leverite is just another rock!
Also a name for someone fond of lever action rifles.

Former coworkers liked to call each other by their initials rather than names. My inititals are K.W. They thought that had too many vowels, so I became "K-Dub". Simple, really.

The native americans carried medicine bags with them full of good luck omens and charms. I have a little leather medicine bag I have carried in my hunting fanny pack for about 25 years with small keepsakes such as spent bullets dug out of deer, small turkey beards, a bear claw, a fosselized horses tooth, arrowheads, and small sawed off deer spikes from an incredibly lucky shot 20 years ago. I rub the bag before I hunt for luck. I hunt with some catawba indians who do the same.

BAGTIC
11-06-2006, 06:51 PM
My wife is Filipina from the central region (Visayas) of the Philippines. When we moved to Missouri last year we both instantly realized that the local 'Ozark Pavement' looked like the land in her home barangay (village) of Bagtic (one of three that I have located on the Philippines map so far). Its about 90 % rock and 10% mud. Got more rock in my 'soil' that concrete has aggregates.
During our last trip to her village I had learned that the Visayan word 'bagtic' means hard. I figured we were in a 'hard place' so BAGTIC it was.

Red Pepper
11-09-2006, 06:09 PM
I got my handle courtesy of a hard-of-hearing posse leader in a Cowboy Action Match. When I first started CAS competition, I was going to go as an old-west preacher named Textus Redceptus, a play on the latin term for the Received Text (the document used in the translation of the King James Bible) and my red hair. The posse leader, an older gentlemen, couldn't understand what I was saying and called me "Red Pepper", and the name stuck. I like it anyway, because I love hot peppers and it was much easier to say than my original handle!

I run under either Stoffa or chris_stoffa which are both derived from my first name "Christopher" - How I got mine was a little odd, many years ago just as a joke and a bit of an entrance when i walked into a local computer shop I would call out "it is I, Chris topher" with just a slight pause between the two syllibals as they were usually down the back of the shop. ( they are now real close friends)......So how did I get the handle from that you ask, well I had them do some computer work for me and Lewis in sending me the invoice for the work knew my address but thought my name was actually Chris Stoffer , so he sent me a bill with that marked on it, I went back and gave him a ribbing over it, his wife , Sue, and son nearly died laughing as a result ( they knew my surname) and the name has stuck ever since , even to my workplace and home.

CoyoteJoe
11-29-2006, 07:30 AM
Once thought I'd make my living as a coyote trapper, back in the mid-70's. After getting to know the critter I came to admire it. Coyotes are so smart they make the fabled fox look plumb stupid. Coyotes have a sense of humor, I've had many of them play tricks on me and sit back to watch and laugh out loud! Coyote is the great survivor, man has wiped out all other predators but coyote flourishes where he was never known before. I learned the Native American legends of the Coyote trickster. Just like "Wiley Coyote" cartoons, Coyote was always trying to take advantage of other critters and always ended up out-smarting himself. I said "hey, that's me, my most carefully laid plans seem always to go wrong".
I adopted the name CoyoteJoe, have publish magazine articles and a book of poetry under that name and most people in the small towns where I've lived don't know me by any other name. I've never legally changed my name but for all practical purposes I am CoyoteJoe.
Yes, the Navajo and Hopi Indians revered the coyote as the trickster of the animal world.
When the world ends, the last two life forms will be the coyote and the cockroach - and the cockroach had better watch out, as the coyote will eat ANYTHING! :p

Conagher
11-30-2006, 07:29 PM
Got mine from my boss about 12 years ago. We are both Louis Lamour fans, read everything he ever had in print. Just a few weeks after the movie came out on TNT we had an arrest warrant to serve on a guy that we weren't to sure if all his marbles were still in the sack so when he barricaded himself in his single story house my Sgt. wasn't in a mood for a stand off. This was before our dept. had a SWAT Team so he watched this suject pace back and forth in his front room while I snuck around to the side of his house and laid a ladder up the side and stuck a metal bucket over his chimney. Then as luck would have it, he left the keys in his pickup so I just drove it up to his backdoor and blocked it from opening, got out, took up a posistion in his back yard and just waited for him to try something stupid. He must have been burning some fairly green fire wood because it only took about 15-20 minutes unitl he crawled out of the front door and surrendered. My Sgt. got him cuffed and stuffed in the back of the car but he started laughing so hard that it was another five minutes before we could leave and head for the jail. And ever since that day he has called me Conagher. Might have to see the movie to understand it. Old Conagher smoked out some cattle ruslers from thier cabin about the same way.
