Anybody have any opinions on aftermarket stocks for SKS', more specifically the cheap synthetic ones put out by Advanced Technology? My friend just got a Yugo and after fooling with it I must have one of my own. I'm looking to cut some unnecessary weight and a few stocks seem to be a decent solution.
Restocked a Russian SKS a some years ago with a synthetic stock. Forget the name of the company, but they are located in Oklahoma. The stock was in the "Draginov" style. Can't say it saved any weight and the accuracty was the same - lousy.

Pretty much nothing is going to amke it into a light weight...I've tried. Lose the bayonet, lose the grenade launcher, and replace the stock....that's about a slight as it's going to get short of taking a grinder to it.
The Yugo stock is kind of heavy...not quite as heavy as the laminate wood ones, but it's close...the Yugo's wood is dense and usually well oil soaked, so they come in a bit heavier than most.
Used the simple syntetic replacement stock offered (the sporter style, not the odd looking Draginov) on one rifle...flet a little better, but didn't notice a drastic differnce in weight. Might help in the Yugo's case as the issue stock is heavier than the cheap "monky wood" China made stocks.
Think you'd be better off to just live with the weight and spend that extra money on amnmo...they seem to go theough ammo a lot fastr than you'd expect.

Thanks for the money-saving advice guys. I was looking at the "Draginov" hoping the open cutaways would save some weight, but I didn't care for the looks of it. Now I don't have to consider it. How have you fared with extended magazines? So far we've just been loading my friends with 10 round stripper clips to good effect. After yesterdays problems ejecting he took apart the gas assembly and cleaned it out, and its fared much better. Now I have to decide if I let jealousy talk me into aquiring a like SKS. Any other quality semi's worth thinking about, under $300. Local shops got a Saiga import, but I think I'll steer clear of that one. Thanks again.

Most people find the extended cap detachable mags don't work too well. IMO you are better off sticking with stripper clips. You can load them almost as fast as you can trying to get in and out those so-called detachable mags and run with a lot fewer problems. Some people get lucky and they work for them, but most I have run across say they are junk.
