Our local Library had a first edition of Ray Riling's Guns and Shooting - A Bibliography. The book was pristine. I believed I was the only person who looked at it for many years. This valuable book recently disappeared from the Library. I don’t know how a book can be stolen from the reference section but it did happen.
I scraped all my mad money together and bought a 2nd. Edition Memorial copy from Ray Riling books. I enjoy visiting the Library and will miss spending time in the reference section with this book. Setting down with this book in a quiet corner was like visiting a long time knowledgeable friend.
Now the good part. While on-line ordering the bibliography from Riling I noticed that Ken Waters novel; Sea Officer, was on sale for $8.95! I like Ken Waters and ordered this book on a whim. I don’t read much about the "War of the Rebellion" unless guns are the main part of the story. I have not been able to put Water's book down. It is well written and very interesting. I know nothing about sailing ships and have had to refer to a dictionary with ships rigging pictured. Waters develops his characters well and his story is based on actual happenings. The book is supposed to be the first of several on the Civil War by Water's. I hope he has time to write the others.
I heartily recommend Ken Waters Sea Officer to anyone with an interest in the Civil War or sailing ships. For readers like me who had no prior knowledge as to how ships were handled at sea or rigged for war it is especially interesting.
