Howdy!
I have been anonymously cruising through these threads for some time and I finally decided to ask a question. You all have more accumulated knowledge than any books I could read on the subject, so here goes. Does anybody have any knowledge of a wildcat based on the .30-30 case necked up to .35? I had a 336 Marlin once which seemed to have a shot out barrel, and I remember a gunsmith mentioning a rebore/rechamber to such a wildcat. I traded the rifle off without getting the work done. This happened back in the mid sixties, and in reminiscing, this wildcat came to mind.
Also, is there any historical information on necking the .32-40 case up, such as the .33-40, which was Harry Pope's favorite wildcat? :)

go to the members section and search for C. E. Harris. Search his threads and you will see at least one good post on the cartridge.

The cartridge you are referring to is called the 35/30-30. it was the favorite modification for shot out 30-30's and quite a few 32-40's as well as the 32 Special's. all of the cartridges listed can be formed from 30-30 cases. the 32-40 is .15" longer than the 32 Special and the 30-30, but when 30-30 cases are resized to 32-40 they end up within a few thouands of an inch , and are quite suitable for use. the 35/30-30 can be loaded to the same level as the 35 Remington but must be done with caution as the case is .1CC less in capacity. Had I had a 30-30 with a shot out barrel I probably would have gone with the 35/30-30, cut the barrel to 16.5" and installed a 1/2 Magazine and hollowed out the butstock. This would make a great woods rifle, as it would be short, light and easy to handle. I never load more than 3 or 4 rounds in the magazine anyhow. It would also be adviseable to install a good rcoil pad, as I believe this combination would have more than it's share of recoil. Hope this is the information you were looking for.

This is not a very clear scan, but it gives you an idea of the history and capability of this wildcat. If you need a clearer copy, send me an email.

In the 1970s, Ken Waters came up with the 350 Maine Guide for rebored 32 Specials. It might be an improved version.

I'm still trying to get my head around a shot out 30-30 barrel....I bet that takes some doing!
