I am considering buying a uberti BP revolving .44 carbine. What is the maximun velocity you can get from one (it has an 18" bbl) can it shoot conicals as well and RBs? any other info regarding cattlemans carbines would be much appriciated.

RG, the carbine is just a long-barrel, stocked version of the Rem. New Army. You can shoot anything in it that you can shoot in the revolvers, RB & conical included. I don't know how much velocity increase you could expect, but I would expect another 10" of barrel to help. The .45 Colt conversion cylinders for the pistol would fit as well.

Be sure you keep your weak-hand wrist away from the cylinder, or you will be burnt. I guess you could keep your weak hand wrapped around your strong hand like you were shooting a pistol squaw-style (2-handed), or be sure to wear long sleeves and leather cuffs.

You could make a similar gun on a Colt, by buying an 1860 with the grip frame cut for a stock, a detachable stock (both from Uberti), and a "Wyatt Earp" 12" barrel assembly. I think you could order it all from Dixie Gun Works. The Remington would probably work better though.

A Henry would work better than either, which is why the original Cattleman was only made for a few years. But this is about fun, right?

I have been using a Remington 1858 New Army Carbine (Uberti) for some time and am very pleased with it! I have tried about all powder combonations (25-30gr. equv.) and ,454" round balls. With my old eyes and the crude sights, I can keep the six balls grouping around 3"-4" at a true 50 yards. I see very little difference in accuracy between black FFFg, Clean Shot FFFg, Pyrodex FFFg, or the new 777 FFFg. I was surprised at how much soot & smoke the 777 produced!
A couple of suggestions.......Get a set of AMPCO nipples from Track of the Wolf! Be sure to send them one of the nipples out of your gun.....there are two sizes in this gun!
I have not ran the loads across the chrony, but my brother did kill a nice hog at about 30 yards with mine.....hit about the ear, went down stone dead!........James
