I know this is not the proper forum to post this but I see the last post in the hunting section was 9 monts ago. Last night I was out scouting some bucks and came upon something very very unusual. there was an 8 point and a 6 point hanging out together. The 6 pointer had his toungue hanging out the entire time I watched them. This was roughly 30 mins. It resembled the same as when they are dead. I have never seen anything like this. Does anyone know why that deer would do that?

It could be a few things. My first guess, since you watched the deer for 30 mins. it could be a deer with CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease). Also depending on the weather conditions it could be a simple as a sparing match between the two bucks. It is not unusual to see bucks hanging around each other before the rut starts.

I thought about the chronic wasting disease but we haven't heard of any reports in NY yet of that. I also thought about maybee he was worn out from sparing with the bigger buck but I sat there and watched both of them for about a half hour and they didn't even look at each other. I'm headed back tonight to see if I can spot him again. I'd like to get some pics of this to show people.

I would love to see the pics if you can get them. You may even try to contact your local conservation department.

definitely considering calling the DEC if I see that buck doing that again. I think he was just worn out after everyone I spoke to today. Maybee the DEC will let me introduce Mr. 35Whelen to him a little early!!! that would be fun.
trying to get pics but this **** tropical storm in putting the damper on things here today. wish they would stay in florida where they belong. today was supposed to be tree stand building day

Blue tongue disease possibly. Was the deer near water or scrawy, losing weight?

Jumping to the conclusion of a specific disease is a risky one when dealing with any medical problem whatever the disease or signs. I would also count out any other possible causes. Does the animal have a hard time eating and drinking? Does it show neurologic signs? Does it have a hard time walking? What is the animal's condition? Any chronic disease can have wasting. Many conditions can have an animals tongue being affected. He may even have a previous injury where the tongue has to hang out because nothing is holding it in. If you observe him eating somewhat normally, that would be my fist guess. Culling him may not be a bad idea. I get caught occasionally doing this. I have shot a doe with an arrow in the shoulder and last year it was a large buck with spikes. Never matured with normal antlers. I was culling a defective gene. Good luck and good observing. I would like to see something for that long this year. Not much going on in my neck of the woods so far.

Remember most furred animals cool there bodies bye panting, like a dog, not a uncommon thing to see during warm weather or after a good run. God lets hope it is not waisting disease. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Another idea.

Sunday morning I was sitting in a stand watching the deer, and noticed a lot of pre-rut activity. The bucks were chasing the doe. Running them in circles. The doe were not ready, but the bucks always sure were.

I have seen bucks do that during our full rutting cycles down here, they literally run until their tongues hang out.

Usually about 4-5 days before the full moon in October they will go crazy even though the doe still aren't buying it.
About 28 days later in November, we have the full rut.
And this time, the bucks have seperated and don't want company from another buck

If you saw this at night, was the moon on the horizon or straight up? Was the temp cool?

Anyway, I have a buck on film from last year, the third week of October doing the same thing.

With all of the rain we've had, plus the cooler temps, the Oak trees are loaded with acorns. Might be an early winter.
Anyway, I hope the buck you saw wasn't sick.

Good Luck

Sage words, but if the tongue was hanging out the side of the deer's mouth and giving it breathing/eating problems, it might be disease related. Check with your State DNR/Parks & Wildlife folks, and be sure that you obey all the game laws, because mercy killing or not, you could still loose your gun and be prosecuted. Blue tongue disease has not shown up here in Texas, but a profile and alert on the disease has been circulated anyway. It is NOT related to CWD, although the deer's unseady gate, falling down and wasting may make it appear as such.

Salty ,
I have personally witnessed this myself in both buck and does. I live in a remote area of W.V. and some joker down the road has hounds and when they run those deer they will actually run till they drop and they will let their tounges hang out of thier mouths to help them breath I also have seen them panting so hard that saliva just foams in their mouth and on thier chin. Deer do not sweat like a horse does and thus they pant like a cow or dog. A hound can actually run a deer to death they will die from heat exhaustion .

Hi, don't sweat it, but this post should be a new thread in the Muzzleloader forum. I'll copy it there and all replies about Whitworth's should go there.

It's illegal to hunt deer in NY with hounds and most dogs that chase deer in the woods here never leave the woods! Anyway, Since that night I watched the 2 bucks I have not seen either one since!?!?! Every large buck I was watching must have wandered somewhere else for a while. I hope they come back, bow season is next week!
