I would suggest the New England Firearms/H&R Survivor. Take a look at it at www.HR1871.com. I got one in .308 last year and have found it very accurate (1/2" 3 shot groups at 100yds). It has a thumb-hole stock which actually has storage for ammo or other stuff in the stock and fore-end. Also comes with a heavy barrel and scope mount, which is great. It's short, light, has a pretty decent trigger, and is so steady because of the thumb-hole stock. Got mine ordered through Wal-mart for under $200. That's hard to beat. Good luck.

Your other option is the Rossi break-open single shots. I looked at a stainless synthetic model in .223 and it locked up well and seemed o.k.. It's no Merkel or Dakota but for under $300 whatta ya want?
I do think that you'll find it difficult to find one without a Montecarlo stock. Perhaps you could ask Rossi is you can get the synthetic stock and fore end from the stainless rifles as it isn't a Montecarlo stock.
On the other hand, if you buy a matched pair, that is a .308 rifle with an additional shotgun barrel(either 12g or 20g) you'll get a standard stock and the overall weight is only 5.62 pounds. Furthermore the entire outfit list as only $231 on Rossi's website. Perhaps this would solve your problem.
Check out http://www.rossiusa.com/main/index.cfm for the full details.

yes i owna rossi combo with 2 .22 barrels a .44 barel and .410 barrel and like it, but the 12 ga frame is bulky and in my opinion is ugly. has anyone tried the baikal rifles??

RG, you could buy a regular NEF Synthetic Handi Rifle (or wood too for that matter), and get a replacement buttstock from NEF and still have money left over from your $300.00. On select models of the Handi Rifles (in certain calibers) they come equiped with Open Sights and a straight comb style stock. I checked with NEF a few years back and you can buy the stocks from them out of their parts dept.

If you phone H&R - NEF they will send you out a parts catalog complete with all of the accessory barrels they offer.
I have worked with a couple different NEF Handi Rifles, and found them to be a good value for the $$$ spent. Unfortunately I do not have one at this moment, but I have done other dumb things in my life also.
