i'm looking for a good 45/70 single shot rifle.

so far i have found the baikal IZH single shot 45/70 and the H&R 45/70 does anyone have experience with either of these? are there any other good'uns out there? I was aiming at a .308 but i would rather have a lound bang than a loud bang, CRACK! So the 45/70 should be a bit easier on the ears. And besides i allways wanted to try a 45/70 :)

There's also the Ruger No.1, several Sharps replica's, and you should be able to find a used B78 or 1885 from Browning.

Don't forget Thompson/Center's Encore. I shot one of their Katahdin Carbines the other day, now it is on my I've got to have list.

Might be able to find a Ruger #1, or an older Ruger #3 in 45/70. I am not sure ruger is still making the #1 in 45/70 and they quit making the #3 quite some time ago.

Thinking...you first posted on a .308 SS on a budget...unless that budget has grown, then the best buy is going to be the H&R or the Bakial.

Have only looked at two Bakial single shots, never fired them...but have use other of their products and have been happy. OF course, if soemthing does go wrong, where do you send it?

Looks like the Handi-Rifle would be the best budget choice. Simple, strong, not too expensive, and accurate rifles.

--------
Have fired the Handi-Rifle in .45-70 (and the older H&R). Does get your attention with upper level reloads, but the factoy loads aren't too distracting.

Have noticed a couple of used rifles at recent gun-shows. Not abused or worn out, and if pressed their owners admit they didn't care for the recoil. That's an individual thing, but most can handle 45-70 recoil well.

thanks guys, i was considering a ruger no. 1 or no.3 ut all the yo-yo's around here want $500-$800 for them. I will just get me a handi rifle. i will be shooting lo power handloads mostly unless i decide to go aftersome big stuff in canada :)

I would seriously consider the encore. I have an encore with several barrels. 30/06, 22-250, 45/70, and 209x50 ML. They all shoot very well and considering the quality and versatility they are a bargin. I know a lot of people really like thier H&R single shots too. Good luck to you.

A friend of mine did this twice! He tightened the forearm screws down snugly on a 45-70 Encore barrel and dimpled the bore by tightening the screws! Did it to two barrels. T/C replaced both and he promptly traded the third. Must be the 45 cal bore makes for very little barrel material in the forearm screw area. And if you don't snug 'em down you'll lose the screws.

For that reason, I know I'd never get a 45-70 Encore barrel and this comes from a big T/C fan. Besides, I am quite happy with my Marlin 1895 CB and Ruger No. 1 in 45-70.

I haven't had any trouble like that in my 45/70 barrel, but I'll keep an eye on it. I always mount my forearms with neopreme washers between the barrel and forend. Maybe this helps keep them tight.

riot-gun,

I have more 45-70s than I need. If you want, I'll sell you my H&R Whitetails Unlimited edition 45-70. It is one of the 2 best-looking 45-70s H&R ever built (the other being the Buffalo Classic). It has a walnut stock with Whitetails Unlimited medalion in the buttstock, and Whitetails Unlimited logo etched on the receiver. The receiver is also more highly polished than other H&Rs. I bought it slightly used and it's in great condition. I'll sell it to you for what I have in it, plus freight. Send me an email at hunterscout2002@yahoo.com .

Live well

P.S. Two reasons I would sell this to you: 1- To help pay for the new Parker bow I just bought, and; 2- Because a fellow shooter stated an interest in a nice 45-70 that doesn't cost a month's wages.

I have a little experience with the New England Arms S/S 45-70. About 6 years a go I bought one for my son at a clearance sale. I mounted a Tasco 2.5 X scope in weaver rings. He uses 350 gr. hand loads with it. I have seen him shoot crows at 125 yards and watched him use it on a bull Moose and a Brown Bear. Flattened both with ease. It is a reasonably accurate gun and is deadly on our biggest game within a 150 yards or so.
I have a Bakail in 30-06, it is very accurate and fun to shoot.
Good Hunting

If you're interested, I have a like-new NEF 45-70 with synthetic stock and scope base(it also has open sights) that I would like to sell. Let me know.

My first .45-70 was back in the late 1970's and it was the H&R Shikari (some of you old timers will remember it), and it was a pretty good shooter for the money. I understand New England Arms now produces one for around $200.

For what it's worth..I have a few NEF and H&R single rifles and single shotguns..I love my 308 with black synthetic stock...compact, comfortable and shoots great.

I am now on the market for a H&R/NEF single in 45/70 that I can mount a scope on. Sure would like the Buffalo Hunter with an antique looking long brass scope on it!

I've got 4 NEF Handi's and a 45-70 on order which will make 5. Guess I kinda like em. All I can tell you is that with a little tinkering they are very accurate. Some need a 9/16ths rubber O-ring or two under the barrel lug to float the forend stock, others are fine out of the box after about 100 rounds of break in. My 30-06 is as accurate as as my model 70 30-06 and believe it or not the 30-30 rivals both of them. I shot my buddies 45-70 Handi at the range and loved it so ordered one.

Grifiga, I've still got my H&R Shikari in the back of the safe. Bought new in 1974 for $50.00 at a local gunsmith. That was back when I thought I was a stock refinisher. :) Lots of cast boolits and a wide variety of powders have gone down the bore in 33 years. My most recent fun load is very light charges of Bluedot behind Remington 405 grain soft points. Probably 1000 fps if that. One hole groups with a jury rigged tang sight at 50 yards, and less than 2" at 100 yards. Pretty good for a $50.00 rifle. I'll post some pictures in a week or so. I never felt good about loads much over factory levels with the break open single shot, but I have a Marlin for hotter loads and a 458 Win Mag if I really need to launch those 405's with some serious impetus.
